Yearbook Production & photos

->> I am looking for experiences/advice you may have had making yearbooks for schools.. maybe church directory experience applies too.

I have a great opportunity to bid on the photography of a local Middle School... only about 500 kids. The photos are not an issue, but the contract is tied in to producing a yearbook as well.

The current company they are using is one of the Big Companies in the industry. They allow the "yearbook staff" (kids at the school in a class) create some of the content and upload it.

It is a 44 page stapled B&W book with a color cover, 8.5 x 11.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

->> I would check to see what software the kids are using to do the layout for the books. That may be your biggest hurdle. If it is integrate in to the big company's system, it may not be something you can use if the big company leaves.

Printing may be the easiest part. Call a couple of local printers and get some prices. By way you said it is laid out, you should be able to give the printer a PDF and it should maybe cost $3.00 per book. Two of the HS sports programs I work on are about the same size and cost only $2.25ea to print.

->> Try Marathon Press...they have a very extensive program for laying out and creating yearbooks...I haven't tried the software, but from the literature it looks decent.

Good Luck

->> You can use MyPublisher to create the books and parents can then purchase them online. You will have no upfront printing cost.

Have the kids on staff produce the pages and save them as TIF files in PhotoShop. When you need add them to the page layout you change the format to jpg and place the page.

There are a couple of other companies that do this as well. My publisher was the first to come to mind.

Good luck!
