Fresno State stadium info
Tom Morris, Photographer

->> Will be shooting at Fresno State this Saturday. 7 pm kickoff. Any updates on the facility. New lights? maybe?
Working conditions? Is there a photo room?
Sidelines packed with all the "jock sniffers"?
How 'bout those triangle foam ad boards?
So many questions. Too few answers.

->> Hi Tom,

I will be there Sat. but I don't have too many answers for you since I haven't shot there in over a year. As far as I know everything is pretty much the same. 7pm start means pretty dark. Like 1600 iso dark. The light drop off is in the 250th 2.8 range in the end zones. Pretty bad. And there's a funky color cast to boot. It could have improved since I was there last, but I doubt it.

There is a photo room upstairs but you'll have to get there early to make sure they open it up. I say that because I doubt anybody else will use it. The hike up the stairs to the elevator is so strenuous, steep and crowded that it's almost not worth it. To us, it's not. We'll be sending from a wireless card from the parking lot. It will save 10-15 minutes on the round trip easy. You'll need that at halftime. I've got doubts on whether or not there's even Wifi available up there. You wonder why they call it the WAC? And for all I know the "jock sniffers" and triangle ads are there to stay. Good luck!

->> Hey now Craig, don't dog on the WAC in general, come to Boise and we'll hook you up with a quiet photo room that is 2 minutes from the blue turf (and no stairs), WiFi, comfortable chairs, and cable TV to boot.

Having said that, I'll see you in Fresno in a few weeks.

Ric--Robert and I exchanged SS emails. He hasn't been back to his alma mater since he posted the info in 2002 . . . so that's why I came on here to the forum.
I luv my SS.

Yes, I've heard much about the plush setting up at the big blue turf. But it'll be tough for me to wrestle that gig away from Kurt Hegre. It's his home away from home. See ya soon.

->> Actually I was there a couple of seasons ago for USA TODAY ... and not much has changed since Bulldog Stadium opened when I worked as the chief photographer of the Visalia Times - Delta 20 years ago.

The lights back then weren't very good and they have not improved.

As I told you, I doubt very much they would bring in supplemental lighting. But you can call the SID's office and ask them if you really need to know that.

We have bad lights, annoying triangle ads and a long walk to the press box. The press box does have WiFi now.

Craig, Tom, see you guys there.

->> Bulldog Stadium is the WORST stadium I have shot in the four years of shooting for Fresno State. Last night October 4th 2008. I witnessed complete incompetence on the part of everybody in charge. I have tried to be a voice for the working photographers at bulldog stadium but my voice has fallen on def ears, last night was sad to say the worst night I have ever seen.

1. There was two guys with no credential and no armband (this was started two years ago to limit field access) I have shot the last two home games with no armband and not once have I been approached by anybody.
1a. these two guys were inside the 12ft mark and sometimes on the field shooting god know what because all they had was (guy one a 20d and a kit lens) (guy two a MK2 and 70-200 2.8)
1b. Several other photographers also were shooting from inside the line because they felt that if they (the two guys) can do it and not get asked to leave then they can do it also. This cause a problem for everybody else now because they are in the way now.
1c. I contacted head security told him about it and he did not do anything about it. So I called the Photography Corrinator and Assitant Director of Media Relations and told her about the infraction and finaly got some results. One guy was ask to leave the staduim (at the end of the 4th quarter) and one other photographer got his pass taken and asked to leave, the other photographer I found out is a brother of a coach and was still shooting and was not told he can't be there.
1d. As a result of doing all this I know I miss several shots and was unable to do my job because of other people.

2. arm bands Fresno St implemented a new way to limit who is on the field by issuing paper armbands so security will know who need to be on the field and who is just a fan. The problem with this is all the "jock sniffers" (thanks Tom) have one so nothing has changed.

3. Fresno State has to provide so much space for ads that they had to make the foam triangle ads on the line of the 12ft mark so the shooting line is behind the ads. 15ft from the field. Combine this with the benches spilling out of the bench area and TV crews walking in front of the ads makes shooting on the side lines beyond impossible.

4. CSC personnel, all they are is a minimum wage person standing there. Look for no help there.

5. No working photographer room near the field. Bulldog Stadium is one of the only places that has no working area near the field in my experience. Boise State's room is very nice. The Bulldog "WI-FI" is the network from the press box so good luck getting a signal. I always feel bad for the guys that have to transmit at the half because they have to fight the crowd to get to the press box, not to mention the stairs.

6. The lights, over the last four years I have been told that most of the lights are burned out and are slowly replaced and a result iso 1600 1/500 f2.8 a third stop faster in four years.

7. Freelancers that all they want to do is watch the game from the field and take some photos. Not looking for money, and don't care about their images, and in my opinion shooting with sub par equipment for football.

Fresno State is looking for National Coverage for all their games. I have no problems with this but they need to learn from other schools how it is done.

This is my fourth year shooting for Fresno State as a "Staff Photographer" I have shot at the following stadiums

Rose Bowl
LA Coliseum
Boise St (Humanitarian Bowl)
Texas A&M
Memphis (Liberty Bowl)
Washington
San Jose (regular season and Silicon Classic Bowl)

I know this seems like a rant (it is to a point) but I feel I need to let everybody know the truth. Be careful!

If you have any questions contact me a kkountz@csufresno.edu or kkountz@kphoto.net

You should have seen it during the JR (no periods) Boone, Jim Sweeney and Bob Padilla eras!

Give Big Bill McEwen a call over the FreBee and ask him about the "good old days" when the entire Bulldog Foundation lined up on the sidelines during games at Radcliffe Stadium!

Check out my comment on the sidelines on the recent USC - Ohio State game in the current newsletter. Now THAT was the worst I have ever seen ...

Maybe it's good that it was a late start ... most of the media , poll - voters and college football "fans" missed the Dogs' big flop...

There are a couple of other schools that are mentioned in the same breath as Fresno State in talk of "BSC crashers" ... Boise State and Utah. Are things bad there as well?

->> Robert you are so right a "Big Time" school dose not lose to Hawaii at home.

Nor should the kicker miss a kick at home. He makes them on road games but not at home.

This happens every year Big hype over being ranked in top 25 and the season flop big, no rankings and we go to a bowl. Boise St is backing up their Big Time push by Winning the WAC and all their other games. Fresno just need to work on being consistent across the board and it starts with the facilities.

I have see a game at Radcliffe and to be honest I would rather shoot there then Bulldog stadium. I use to shoot FCC Rams and there was so much room it was great. In fact FCC has won more State titles than Fresno State has won WAC.

Bottom Line I work for the people that enforce the rules and runs all the shows and I feel there is going to be no change anytime soon. They are not ready for the Big Time.
