Wireless Audio with Canon XH A1 camera
Kevin Seale, Photographer

->> I am working with a local coach to develop an instructional video. I have a Canon XH A1 camera and would like your recommendations for the best way to hook up a wireless mic to this camera so the coach can move around on the floor and talk as I film.

I would also like this solution to be functional with my Zoom H4 recorder if at all possible for additional project work.

I am new to video and even newer to audio so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. If your time permits, expanded recommendations on additional accessories that might be helpful/required would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Kevin

->> any decent wireless mic will have either a 1/8" mini output or an xlr output, both of which will work with the Canon. I cannot speak about your other recorder.

->> I personally use the Sennheiser Evolution series, g1 and g2. The G2 is a big improvement in that it's smaller, still very stury metal design, and has a great range, plus comes complete with the cables you need to connect to 1/8th or XLR.

To use it with your Zoom thought, you'd have to have the receiver connected to it, so you'd essentially be carring two units connected by an audio cable.

We connect the unit to one channel of audio, reserving the other channel for ambient, then downmix it later to get a good blend for video.

Heres some Sennheiser kits at B&H

You can get a G2 wireless system (transmitter, receiver, lav mic) for $500.

It'll feed into your Zoom H-4 with no problem (into EITHER the A or the H-4 unless you get a second receiver).
