SS member Tony Ding's SI cover!! WOW!
Phil Hawkins, Photographer

->> Kudos to Tony Ding and the incredible shot of Appalachian State wide receiver Dexter Jackson in the Michigan game. Maybe many of you don't think so, but I think this is one of SI's best covers. This shot summarizes what happened more than any other. And the Michigan defender's eyes say it all.

When you want an example of a photograph's ability to speak volumes in one image, this is it.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_online/covers/issues/2007/0910.html

Think SI will sell any cover reprints in Boone?

Oh, BTW, before I forget, it's "App-a-LATCH-in" not "App-a-LAICH-in". It's like fingernails down a chalk board when I hear idiots on the radio or TV saying it wrong.

Nice shot, Mr. Ding :)

->> OK... LOL

I grew up in NC, been to Tweetsie Railroad more times than I can remember (and still have one of those stupid bumper stickers they used to put on people's cars...), I was accepted to App State but went to Elon instead... My Dad is from Hendersonville, and anyone who knows where the hell Big Willow is... well, the point is I KNOW how to pronounce Appalachian... Appalachian is pronounced "App-pah-LATCH-un". Appalachia is pronounced "App-pah-LAY-chee-ah". It is different, I know, and Yankees don't know nuthin' about how it's done. Just like Norfolk, VA is not "NOR-foke" it's "NAR-fu*k". I want to throw a shoe at Dan Rather's face every time I used to hear him mis-pronounce it.

C'mon, get with it.....y'all.

->> Yep, Phil is absolutely correct. I grew up in Hickory, NC (45 miles away) and watched the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears beat Appalachian a couple of times when I was a kid. It was always the big rivalry. My mom, who still lives in Hickory, went by the Lenoir-Rhyne practice field yesterday and said the Bears are sweating bullets getting ready for the game with Appalachian Saturday. Maybe L-R will be on the SI cover next week....

I am an App. St. grad. I grew up in Hendersonville and rode Tweetsie Railroad . . .AND I know where Big Willow is. Small world. I was shooting the Air Force v South Carolina St. game on Saturday. The stadium announcer gave updates every few minutes. Great fun! And great shot Tony! Congrats on the cover!

So... since when was being in any way associated with Tweetsie railroad a badge of honor? You've been gone too long!

I live, work, and play right there in the thick of AppaLATCHia and look at Tweetsie, Santa's Land, Rock City, The Mystery Hole, Ruby Falls, Dollywood, and those of similar ilk as abominable tourist traps that are in no way representative of what Appalachia is truly like. Were it me, I'd be happy to prolong the hillbilly sterotype if it kept all the millinaire "furriners" from building 8000 square foot vacation McMansions on all the exposed ridges.

Guess I'll now crawl back into my "holler"

HS

PS - Oh yeah... how bout them Appies!!!

->> Chris,

You make an interesting point, well taken. Can't disagree, but my only point is that cover shot illustrated so well the domination by App State of a team, Michigan, that was and is shell-shocked. The determined, forge-ahead look of Dexter Jackson just really put into perspective the tone of the game during and afterward. We see App State, tall, balanced, moving forward with not a hint of hesitance, Michigan off-balance, down, deer-in-the-headlights, and heading not forward, but down. It's all in that one shot, and that's what makes it great. Granted, an equally dramatic shot would have been the blocked shot, but it would not have had ALL the dramatic elements to that game that the cover shot did.

This shot would make a great focal point for debate on "What makes a great shot in sports photography". I think it's a classic, on par with NY Jets QB Joe Namath holding up his finger, Joe Montana to Dwight Clark in "The Catch"... Babe Ruth looking at his ball go...

Tony, I bet when you decided to shoot this game you never thought you'd be a part of history no one will ever forget. Probably thought "Yeah, I need a tune up game to get going this season..."

!!!!!!!!!!

Phil

->> Of course, it's only my opinion, but that's how the shot affected me. I can only speak for myself, but I think it's way more than a running back passing a defensive player. It's also App State pushing UM back on their heels. That one shot summarizes the entire game. You have to agree. That's why they put it there...

Again, only an opinion. I absolutely love the shot.
