Pop-ups, ad-aware and spybot . . .

->> Ok, this isn’t sports related or MAC related but if it can help someone else then . . .

I have finally had it with the pop-ups disabling my computer. I was getting dozens all at once. It sounded like a machine gun going off. It was so bad that my keyboard wouldn’t even work. I would constantly have to “control alt. delete” and restart the computer because it would lock up. I finally found something that so far is absolutely working like a charm. I installed both "ad aware and sbybot" and both are free downloads. I cleaned out nearly 200 hidden little demons from my computer and it is finally running like it should. I have not had ONE popup since installing them and the PanicWare pop-up stopper companion. Yippeeee.

Other tortured souls can find relief at:

I feel better now.

->> Key works, kids... Ctrl+Alt+Del... those strike a fatal blow for Dianna and her web surfing experience. She's using a PC. For some reason, the web browsers on Macs just don't respond to all the goofy commands that webmasters put into their websites... Another way to stop popups... Stop reading your porn junk mail... Always ends tragically in your computer being crippled by popups...

BUT I think Safari can ONLY be used on MAC machines or am I wrong? I don't have a MAC ***yet, it is still on my wish list.

->> Dianna,

Netscape and Mozilla have a popup blocker that works real well. It stops the espn one for me as well as my homepage popups from wunderground.com. But only the unrequested popups. You may want to give it a try if you're using a pc.

And a quick cross thread;
Mac or PC users, Eudora is a fantastic email client that works with a 3rd party plugin called Spamnix. Great utility if you're bombarded with spam and don't want to change your email address.

If all the stuff I just downloaded quits working, I will definitely try something other than Internet Explorer. I think that is where most of them came from.

I don't know if you can block all pop ups even if you do have pop up blockers. But I was having the same problem using a Dell running Windows XP. I ended up purchasing Norton System Works.

It includes a personal firewall feature and pop up blocking. It works fairly well most of the time. To send email though, I have to disable it temporarily. I haven't been able to learn how to send email without doing so. But it has provided some decent security and like I said, most ads have stopped popping up. Hope this helps.

->> Woo hoo. I've been online for at least two hours with NO popups. I am happy.

I haven't been on ESPN, SI, or MSN though, so when I start cruising around, we'll see.

Jeff, I had System Works on my old computer and didn't like it. It controlled way too much. I think you have to jump through way too many hoops to use it.

Dianna

I don't think there is any question about it, Norton does make you jump thru some hoops. I guess given the choice of hoop jumping or the endless popups for sex, dates, viagra and penis growth pills, I'll take the hoops any day.
