More Power for Flash

->> I have two questions about external power packs for the 550EX series.

I recently came across a refurbished QB1+ (with new SLA batteries), but need the power cord to connect to the flash. I can't find a cord that connects to the 550EX's high voltage port for the QB1, is it possible to modify an existing cord to do so?

Also, a friend told me about making a battery pack with a 6V SLA battery from BatteryWorld. I don't have the details, but any chance I can take the Quantum CZ cord & attach it to the battery terminals & use that as a fast recharger?

I am planning to use this for indoor sports with bounced flash and would appreciat the faster recycling time.

Any help you can send my way is appreciated

->> Sorry I can't answer your main question, but wanted to mention that you should be careful of the 550EX overheating, etc. if you are going to be using a lot of bounced flash what kind of power will it be at 1/2 and 1/1? Just something else to investigate more and be careful of.

->> As I recall the QB1 is not a high voltage battery, so there probably isn't a HV cord for it. You'd need a Quantum Turbo, Dynalite Jackrabbit, or Lumedyne Minicyler to get HV juice. The QB1 is like 4 AA batteries with lots of capacity.

->> Not sure if this helps or not, but Al Jacobs makes a black box battery pack that has had much acclaim on other forums. He makes his own cords to fit specific flashes. I believe it boasts 1500-2000 pops before needing re-charge.

->> Be careful making your own battery packs for the canon flashes. I fried one doing that. :) I do make them for the vivitar 285hv's though and they work great. I probably put the power cord in wrong or something equally simple, but it did fry that 550 in a heartbeat!

If you're looking for a lighting set up for stuff like basketball and volleyball, take a look at my cheap gym strobe set up.

2 off camera flash heads will give you a nicer light than one on camera flash, even with a bounce card and it's quick and easy to set up before a game. Works great for quick portraits too.

->> I heard back from Quantum, turns out the QB 1 doesn't have the power to charge via the high voltage port, just the battery slots.

Thanks for your help, everyone! Its appreciated!!
