->> LOL... you'd think that _NASA_ could keep dust off the camera's sensor... (see photo #3)

->> My beef with NASA photos are those photos you see on the AP server taken from the NASA TV screens, those ones that are way over pixilated and out of focus, and you can't see jack... you would think that with all the money and high tech equipment on board they could afford a decent camera to take photos for the rest of us here on earth. Although granted from this space mission they did have somewhat better photos than before. (I hope they continue to improve the quality of photos from out of space.)

->> wow, sort of off topic here, but can anyone tell me what land mass is in the backdrop of that first major. i'm usually pretty good with my geography, but from space it's a little tougher.

->> Vasiliy, you answered your own complaint. The NASA photos on the AP wire are pulled from NASA TV, and are not taken from a still camera. The photos they take and transmit back to earth are available on the NASA website. If you know where to look, and are willing to spend the time, the high quality stuff is there for the taking.

->> The landmass is NOT Italy; the peninsula is too narrow, and "Sicily" is too large. If I had to guess, I would say the penisular landmass is the Yucatan Peninsula, and the mass behind it is Hispaniola (Haiti/Dominican Republic)

->> Dave it is "Italy", Mark is correct. The 5 points you see at about 10 from the left side of the space station are from the top going clockwise; Cartone, Torre Mariedda, La Cannella, Capo Rizo, & La Castella. You are looking East at the heel of the boot from right about over top of Sicilia. The island you see right above the space station is the Greek isle of Corfu. Behind Corfu is Albania to the left and Greece to the right. The peninsula you see at about 1:00 from the space station is Lefkada, then the to islands to the right of Lefkada are Kefallonia & Zakynthos also know as the Ionian Islands. Behind those islands you can see the Korinthiakos Kolpos Gulf, and to the right of that you can see the three southern peninsulas of Greece with the isle of Kythira to the right of the most northern of those peninsulas. The water mas you are looking at is the Ionian Sea.

->> FYI, both the italy shot with the ISS small and the close up of ISS were on the AP wire, along with various other "Astronaut X works in the lower deck of the space shuttle Endeavour, etc." I presume AP was simply taking from the NASA website with permission.
There were shots from NASA TV but earlier on in the mission when NASA wasn't beaming down any photos for the news media to use. The only reason AP will ever use screen captures is if they dont have any other choice and there is a pressing need to get something, anything, out there (think I-35 bridge collapse in Minn., there were about 5 or 6 captures from local choppers before there was ever a real still image moved.) |
