micro-cameras a la War Photographer

->> Does anyone know if there is an option - besides the little crappy spy cameras widely available - that would mimic the camera that the filmmakers of "War Photographer" mounted on Nachtwey's Canons while he shot? I'm aware that they came up with custom version for shooting, but I'm interested in finding something that would record sound and have a relatively decent quality for internet and multimedia use. I'm not too worried about the mount, because I can fabricate that...just need some guidance on the actual camera.

Thank you gear-heads...

->> Chip,

Have not seen the documentary but saw one of these cameras at a local electronics store and am thinking of picking one up myself. The Tony Hawk HelmetCam is about the length of two 35mm film canisters end-to-end and about 1.5 times wider than a 35mm film canister. The camera operates on two AA batteries and an the data is stored to a SD card, comes with a 32mb card but I am thinking it will handle a 2GB SD card. If you are interested in the workings of the "toy" let me know I will be picking one up either Saturday or Sunday. I was looking for a video camera that I would not be upset with destroying, or misplacing while doing some on-location shoots.

Oh the link is:

->> Charles, I have a friend who who bought one of the Tony Hawk cameras and he hated it. He used it on his his helmet while we were riding our dirt bikes and the video almost made us sick.
I bought a high end camera system called a SkullCamz setup. I has a sony lipstick camera and an Archos 20 gig hard drive to record the video on. My only gripe about the setup is the mono microphone.

->> Chip there were some interesting options presented in this thread about helmet cams and portable recording devices:

I have considered getting the little Samsung (with detachable auxiliary lens) that Peter Gaby uses... I can think of some interesting applications if the quality is decent.

->> Chip, you might check out some of the spy shops - I googled spy video camera and got a bunch of hits.

One of them -
http://www.spysupplystore.com/ looked like it might have a few that may be what you are looking for. I do NOT have any experienced with this shop or their merchandise, so check it out for yourself.

You might also hit some of of the camera swap shows in your area. I was at a few years ago with my uncle. There was all sorts of small spy type gear for sale - although back then it was all still, no video.

from the website, you'll note that the micro cameras were built by these guys:

http://www.swisseffects.ch/english/e_swiss_effects/pages/e_swiss.htm

it was made a while back so they may be able to help with sound now.

good luck.
