Wedding Album

->> Ok so I am sure this has been asked before but maybe I am blind... I have been looking though the threads but cannot find anything on wedding albums. I want to make a magazine style album for a client with a hard cover and fairly thick pages. I am looking to do the layout, submit it and have it sent to me or the bride. Any help is great even a link to another thread if i missed it. Thanks!

Once you're a member, you can download templates to build your pages in Photoshop. Once you've built the pages, they have a piece of software called "file checker" that does just that and makes a .pdf file you can upload to their site.

Hope that helps,
Kevin

You download free software from their website and you can either use one of their many layouts or design your own. Make sure all your files are in sRGB.

I had a wire photog buddy of mine shoot my wedding. He gave us the RAW images and I put together a great book through my publisher. The quality is right up there with all the photo books i have in my collection. The book when open measures something like 30 inches by 14.

Cheers

Hope that helps.

->> Hi everyone,
I know this is a really old forum but now I need some help in the album area.

Does anyone know how I can do my own printing and then have someone else do the leather covers and binding for me?

Or even if anyone has an awesome way of hand making nice bound books?

I'm wondering in the long run it's cheaper to just have the whole thing sent out? Epson 2200 inks and Ilford papers are going way up in price$$$.

I'd like to find someone fairly cheap and no hassle.

Thanks & Happy New Year!
Liane.

I've heard great things about it, but haven't taken the time to try it myself. Be warned, I don't think hand binding is for the faint of heart. There's a lot that can go wrong, but the end result is a unique book that no one has.

->> I would offer two, maybe three companies. The first two are pretty much the standard for specialty wedding albums.

Both have garnered consistent results that our clients love.

www.visionartbook.com
They are good, however we've found that they are heavy on the yellow - Vision Art prints the pages for you.

And the more high-end option:

www.cypressalbums.com
We print our own pages, mail them and they do the binding. I believe they also print, but with this type of album we print in studio - it's also the most expensive option we offer.

In a pinch, you could go with Graphistudio.
www.graphistudio.com
Their printing has gone up in quality recently, and they are more expensive than they used to be. But it's a last ditch option.

I used to work for 4? different Chicago wedding studios that all used Zookbinders and I wasn't very impressed. They either had the names spelled wrong or the dates wrong on the covers, all the time!!!*#$@. May have been studio error though, you never know???
Anyways, that's why I'm fishing for alternatives. I don't know exactly what this client is looking for but I think they want it in a fart flash!
I don't have any catalogs or brochures to show them either. I made the big mistake of lending mine to a friend.
I think I'm in a huge bind here with the holidays and all.

If you need something in a hurry, self-stick is probably your best option... And there are about a hundred [thousand] people that make those.

Get a DWF membership - it's at
http://www.digitalweddingforum.com , and they have a week free intro membership; it's a much better resource than SS for this.

The altf method is incredibly common and effective, also.

Check the yellow pages for book repair, book binder or possibly check with an antique book store. I am sure there are several options in the Chicago area. Any of these would either be able to custom bind a book for you or know someone who does it.

I spent 15 years working for RR Donnelley in the largest of their six book manufacturing plants and can tell you handmade books require a significant amount of skill to do well along with some very unique tools. The few positions that actually made handmade books were considered very prestigious and the guys who did it were very respected by everyone.

Softcover books are not difficult but casebound with a leather cover is a whole different ballgame.

If you know what size album you are going to print for example 11x14, 8x10, 12x12 you may be able to get your photos printed at your lab and then send them to someone that can bind them. sometimes a small local lab may do the binding but first find out what sizes they have, Different print labs can only bind certain sizes.

I hope this helps

Thank you all, for the very informative feedback.
Kevin, I tried for many years to obtain a job with RR Donnelley. No luck though. I will definitely look into their binding and covers.
I have spent the last 2 weeks looking at online album demo's and videos. I'm blown away with the great websites & marketing these companies are doing. They must turn a pretty penny. I'm in the wrong business!
Turns out my client doesn't want their book until April because they are lucky enough to be spending the next few months in FL. I'm so jealous & very cold!!!!

Again, thanks for all the good info. I hope you all had wonderful holidays.
