rechargeable batteries. What are you using?
Tom Sperduto, Photographer

->> I have been using AA Lithium’s in my SB-800's for a while. I am considering switching over to rechargeable for cost, and because I hear they have gotten much better - more power.
I am hunting around for some above 2500 but can't find any above 2750.

Any reccomendations for rechargeable batteires? There's a million to choose from.
Thanks.

->> Check out these guys

http://thomasdistributing.com/shop/-nimh-rechargeable--aa-nimh-batteries-c-...

I have used 3 different kinds and the ones on the top have worked the best, though I don't know if they're really thaaat much better than some of the lowlier ones.

I also got my charger there, this one
http://thomasdistributing.com/shop/-maha-mhc204w-white-world-battery-charge...

It's small, world power compatible, and it has a conditioner button, like the big Canon camera charger that drains the batteries then recharges them.

When I was looking for batteries, everyone recommended Thomas.

->> Hi Tom,

I use Energizer rechargeable batteries in my 2-sb 800 flash units for day to day shooting. They work great. For my weddings, I use the Quantum Battery 2x2 turbo battery pack. Works amazing! It runs both of my sb800's simultaneous.

->> Energizers. I use a regular charger for my home and I have a 15 minute charger in my car. Rechargeables have not let me down in the 2+ years I've been using them. I just get mine at Beszt Buy. I'll start using Thomas Distributing to save money, but Best Buy's pretty convenient.

->> I started with the Energizers since they were carried by Sam's/Costco but have switched to the Maha POWEREX 2700mah from Thomas. Prices are about the same IIRC, but the Powerex's just seem to last longer than the energizers. We'll see when I start shooting football in the fall. I used to go through two sets of batts for each flash. We'll see how the Powerex's hold up, but I'd recommend them hands down.

->> Energizers are decent, but I have one set of eight 2500s that don't seem to hold a charge very long, even after reconditioning and all that jazz. It's funny, because I have a slightly older set of four Energizer 2300s that never seem to die.

I have had good success with the Powerex 2500s I have. Nimh batteries used to get better and better every month, but they seem to have peaked out a bit after passing 2500 or so. Seems like they've been hanging in that general area for a while now.

->> You might want to check the voltage rating of your energizer and other brand rechargeables. The Energizer, and as far as I know all rechargeable AA's, are rated at 1.2 volts. Normal non rechargeable AA's are rated at 1.5 volts. It can and does make a difference on what you use them in.
I had a problem with my sb-800's going into standby mode with fresh 2500 energizers. When I switched to the regular alkalines the problem went away. The only difference that I could find was the voltage in the batteries. After reading the side of the battery I saw the 1.2v rating. Other people have not had this problem so your mileage may vary.

->> I've had no luck with the Energizer 2500s in my Canon flashes, but they work really well in the Nikon flashes. Sometimes they won't even power on the Canons. I can't explain it. I've tried in numerous 550s and 580s.

I found a good deal at Target on Kodak 2100 mAh batteries, and those hold a good charge and work fine in both my Nikon and Canon flashes.

->> I think you have some bad batteries or bad flashes. I use Energizer 2500's in my 580's and 580exII's. They work as well as I boped, and better. I have 16 of them and 2 of their chargers. I use the slower charger, 3 hours.

To throw another company into the list, check out these folks:

http://www.megabatteries.com/

I purchased eight 2300mAh NiMH batteries from them a while back. They were part of a combo set that included an AC charger and a car cigg-lighter charger as well. Was very happy with all of it ... great price, charged fast and performed well.

Good luck,

- gerry -
