Getty Claiming Copyright to National Archives Images

->> It doesn't mean anything. They put "copyright" on their entire image base. The National Archives images are in the public domain regardeless of what is stamped on them.
There is nothing stopping anybody from charging for copies of public domain images if somebody is ignorant enough to pay for them.

| ->> I think the images should be labeled public domain, but it's not just ignorance. I worked for an education publication that covered a lot of politics and policy. There were times that, even though the requested images were public domain, an archivist could not reasonably get me images on deadline or in a timely manner. For that reason alone, Getty's service/product would be useful. |

->> Public domain, as I understand it, is sorta like air. Anybody can have it for free, and anybody can sell it if they feel like it.Anybody can get a high res. image from the Library of Congress, but like most government agencies it may take a day or a year, so Getty has accumulated the high res files and will sell them to you, and deliver them in minutes like all their other stock images.
Pretty smart buisiness plan. |

->> When I was working at the Office of Chief of Navy Information people would come in and raid our public domain archive of Navy images all the time. Then they would sell them to book and magazine publishers. Some would charge a "research fee", but others would put the © and their name. Pearl Harbor was a big seller.
Like Mark said, you can make money off the ignorant. |
