->> Never thought I'd be writing a question like this but ...
I'm shooting a fashion show for the first time today. I'm using a 50 mm 1.8 on my d2h and a 18-70 3.5 - 4.5 on my d50, with an sb800 strapped to the top.
Never shot a fashion show before. Don't know etiquitte w/ regards to using a flash and also not sure on any techniques.
I'm sure I'll figure it out, but does anyone have any advice? |

| ->> Ask the organizers. I can't imagine that you can't use flash, but I think you're asking the wrong people. I'd also take longer glass and shoot from the end of the runway. |

->> The light is usually very good at fashion shows, hopefully good enough that you won't even need to use strobe, but I've never seen anyone shooting strobe have a problem with it.
Also, backstage makes the best images. |

->> Will's right, you'll want to ask the organizers if you can use flash, but I've shot a few shows and flash was allowed at all of them. I'd also agree with Will's recommendation to bring longer glass, especially if it's on a raised stage.
Any way you can use pocketwizards, or another sb800 as a commander, so you can get at least one sb800 off-camera? If you've shot basketball, then you can imagine the end of the runway as the top of the key, and light accordingly :). |

->> Sam,
I shoot runway fashion all the time. Take a 70-200 2.8 and a monopod.
If it is a good place you will not need a strobe. Set your ISO to 400-500 you should be in the 250 f5 range. If the place is small you can use the 18-70 and a flash. Bring a battery pack. Check out my site for some images.

->> I had an opportunity to shoot some fashion at the Houston International Quilt Show in 2005. I used my 80~20-0 F2.8 lens and no flash. The lighting was excellent.
I would suggest you use a 70~200 F2.8 for your shoot.
You can see a couple of shots from the Houston show here:

->> Hey everyone,
Thanks for all of the advice. The show definetely went by fast, and the models weren't on a raised stage. Rather, everyone in the club sort of crowded around this long carpet, which made it kind of tough to get good positioning. Plus, once I was in position I was stuck there. I fired off test shots before the show started, and was able to get good, clean shots with the 50 mm f 1.8. Right when the show started, they turned off about half of the lights. I fought through it for the first two minutes or so of the show, then switched to my d50 w/ an 18-70, which worked ok for the show. Nothing spectacular from the runway, but I had a blast backstage. Particularly liked working with a prime lens, forcing myself to move around alot, in a situation where the subjects don't move much. Check out some shots I just updated in my member gallery.
