Smashed lens at the Red Sox @ Yankees game, 27 Apr
Scott Foley, Photographer
San Antonio | TX | | Posted: 10:00 PM on 04.27.07
->> Anyone else see this in the 3rd or 4th inning...

...watching the game on NESN and the TV crew showed a clip of 4-5 photographers in the wells chuckling at another photographer who had a lens smashed...looked like it took a foul ball...maybe a 300 or 400 lens...

Who has the story...

GO SOX!

Release of tension, i.e, that could have been mine.
Or perhaps you'd expect reverent silence?

Perhaps sitting in stunned silence, scared sh**less that I'd been THAT close to getting nailed with a ball... but laughing... I doubt it...

Robert: glad you're OK. I'm assuming you know who the shooter who went to hospital was. I'm not asking for an ID, but do you know if whoever it was is OK now ?

->> Sounds like it was definitely taken out of context...the TV showed a photographer showing the lens to the TV camera and the other photographers around were chuckling...the lens looked pretty bad...direct shot...

Robert...glad you are ok and I hope the photographer that went to the hospital is doing well...

As an after thought, I am sure the smiles/chuckling was more from a "holy crap that was to close for comfort" expression and it was just caught by the TV cameraman in that one short clip...

Not going to comment on who was taken to the hospital...not sure what his condition is, nor do I know if he want's the publicity...I'm sure he is fine...he was just shaken up.

Cheers,
Robert

->> OUCH! This is a priceless photo... I think one would have to agree, but the expression on the photogs face says it all. Definitely a downer all the way, but a great shot. I can't think of any context in which one would be motivated to laugh, unless the owner of the lens was trying to make light of something he can do nothing about. What else you going to do? You might as well laugh... (Notwithstanding the photog who had to go to the hospital) It's not something you see every day.

I hope the shooter is OK and has insurance for the lens.

I offered to forward whatever thoughts he had.

->> I know too well the "Holy sh**" that was close feeling. Last year shooting an Orioles game when a Kevin Millar foul ball apparently hit the lens hood of my 300. I can't say for sure where it hit because I had my eye to the camera and trained on Ramon Hernandez on second when I heard and felt the collision. Luckily the lens and my eye were still able to function.

Sure hope this shooter is ok.

->> I never thought I would come so close to getting hit by a baseball as I did last night, I've always seen them come flying off the bats, and out over/into the stands, but I never imagined one flying right towards me, it flew over me, but close enough so I felt the wind rush through my hair as it flew over, that wouldn't have made a fun weekend.

One day, we'll all have shell shock from this sort of thing.

So, 5 minutes later, I have moved down towards the end of the dugout on the first base line. I look up from behind the camera to see a foul ball just inches away. I move my head just slightly, all I had time to do, and catch the breeze from the ball on my left ear. First base coach looks at me and says that I almost caught that right in the hood of my 300. A little too close for comfort.

->> With the consent of the Man in Orange, Saed Hindash of the Newark Star-Ledger,

I can't for the life of me wonder why people are still talking about my lens getting trashed that night at Yankee Stadium. I still can't believe it happened. If it wasn't for the lens - then it would have been my head. So I'm pretty happy to be around. All though one of my bosses jokingly said, “You should have used your head to protect the lens, not the other way around.” Everyone who was in the box that night should consider themselves very lucky. We all came out without a scratch, minus a 300mm lens. And the photographer who was taken to the ER - I spoke to him and he is doing much better. The weirdest part of the night - was that several photographers were coming up and taking pictures of themselves with my busted 300mm lens. Why? It’s not a trophy. It was just a very weird night. Now my wife wants me to start wearing a helmet to Yankee games. I don't think so. Wearing a helmet at New Jersey Devils games - now that's a must!

Maybe the site can offer the new Sportsshooter.com batting helmets instead of the bucket hat...

->> I can remember about 10 years ago shooting a Reds game in Riverfront from the homeplate side of the first base dugout. A foul ball took a hop off the carpet and hit the wall behind our position before going back onto the field. When we asked the usher standing next to us how close it was, his response was, "You don't want to know."

I'm often surprised more people aren't hurt by batted balls at baseball games. Glad to hear that everyone, for the most part, is OK.

->> I was shooting the Home Run derby last year in Pittsburgh a bit up the line from the first base bag/coaches box. I was adjusting my monopod, or something stupid - sitting there, spread eagle and facing home plate. Ryan Howard, the eventual winner of the derby hit a whistling screamer to my left that would have kept me on sportscenter all summer. The ball missed me by 6-8 inches or so. This year, I move closer to the group.

Glad the shooter that was hospitalized is ok.

->> Ooooh..!! That is a very gut wrenching photo!!

I can see that happening... I've had lots of close calls just covering high school athletics to know how a line drive into a 300 can randomly happen..Thankfully all of my hits were not to my gear..just to my body...in various places which was quite a spectical for everyone watching! :-(

For me, the worst I did was "allow" a 600 over my shoulder to be "buffered" by a D30.....which really sucked..

He's looking at an expensive repair.. I hope he is Ok too!!
