->> The situation sounded like a bad decision from the start, a young female, going to an auto salvage yard alone, I doubt a self defense class would have helped. It is a dangerous world, and predators will take any opportunity to hurt people if given the right circumstances. As a father of four daughters, I know that it is a scary world for women, and I caution them to not just trust anyone or believe everyone has good intentions.
You are right though, that a self defense class could not hurt. |

->> Tragic story, whether you are a female or male, no one deserves this.
I for one when heading to certain environments and situations carry my mono pod in the bag for other reasons than to work. It may hold the larger glass when needed for shooting, and comes in handing as a walking stick, and if ever needed it may be my way out of a tricky dilemma.
I see it hard to have photojournalist armed. Even after hearing a story like this. It is just not our business and line of work. However even a camera body on a strap is a decent deterrent if needed. |

->> Louis,
I think you are right about the situation. As someone that has not only taken many of these classes, but who also has taught them, the first thing you should know is to be aware of your surroundings.
For anyone reading this story, man or woman, have a plan before you get involved in these situations. As soon as you feel uncomfortable, be bold about your decision to leave.
Many of you guys walk around with high priced cameras, so dont think it cant happen to you. |

->> Of course it is always easy to look back and say what should have been done. If I were to go into a situation where I would be shooting at a remote location with unkonwns, and especially if I was a woman, I would walk in talking on my cell phone. Letting the clients know I had contact with the outside world and giving the party on the other end my location and approximate time I would be done. A final "I will call you when I am leaving here" may be enough to foil any plans some sicko has in mind.
Establishing where you are and how long you will be and a call when you are clear of the area is a good safeguard. A code word set up in advance to let your contact know something is wrong would be helpful. "I am staying a little longer to have lunch" might be a sign something isn't right and the police can be notified. Might make a difference, who knows. |

->> It's important to trust your gut in these types of situations, and don't talk yourself into it just to be brave.
Nutjobs are everywhere, and it can happen even if you have a partner with you. Back in 1999, a reporter and a videographer from here in Louisville were held at gunpoint by a KKK member and forced to surrender their tapes before they were allowed to leave:

Pretty scary stuff. |

| ->> I'm glad that justice is being served, but it's sad that it happened in the first place. I've had a gun held up to me at a gas station just so that the guy could steal the gas that I was about to pump into my car. You just never know when/what will happen. |

->> I actually just finished my women's self defense class on monday. We learned all these fancy moves but when trouble hits, I'll probably panic and not remember them.
But the thing our instructor stressed is the eye gouge will get you out of almost any situation. (tuck down thumb under palm, spread fingers, make a slight claw, pull your elbow back and strike and aim for the eye region. One of the fingers is likely to get an eye.) Eye gouge and ran like crazy making noise... which I guess if you are in a salvage yard you might be out of luck.
Eye gouge or punch them in the throat (because whatever they are doing they will immediate stop and tend to their pain/choking for air) |
