Fitness and Fotography over Forty

->> I have wanted to ask for a while because photography helped stifle my fitness program since I I bought my first D60 back in 2002. I was regularly, on a yearly basis, running an average over 50miles a week. Now it could be considered a big fat zero but I managed to get out the door the other day for 9 miles and I will go again as soon as I finish this post before shooting high school soccer tonight.
How many shooters here over the age of 40 regularly run, religiously, over 50 miles a week?
I find it difficult to do this, work a regular job and shoot photos, process photos and keep websites updated.
Something has got to go and it's probably going to be the photography.
I guess it's all about your priorities. My brain is tired after running 10 miles. |

->> Nic, I saw the better side of 40 many years ago. If I ran 50 miles in one week, I'd be pushing daisies the next.
However, fotography for me has kept me a lot more active that if I weren't doing it. I'd be sitting on the couch tonight enjoying some hotwings and the company of my wife if I wasn't leaving in 15 minutes to shoot a UIF game.
Does it keep me in as good a shape as running 50 miles a week. Probably not, but I'd be in a lot worse shape if I wasn't doing it at all. |

I run between 5 and 20 miles per week. I did complete a marathon several years ago and I believe that it is not the miles that you run but regular exercise several days a week.
Running is a great way to clear some stress. I realize not everyone can take the impact on the knees but a walk can do wonders.
I demand a lot from my body when I am photographing and I don't see myself stopping for 20 years more. I am convinced that my running has helped with reeling in the years.(46)
I believe your body is like a nicad battery. If you charge it fully then only use it for a few minutes and you continue to do this, you will only be able to get a few minutes of use as it will develope a memory. That is why I run - draining the nicads!
If I may go O.T. and say that equally important is diet.
Leave the free hotdogs on the rack at the media center. Experts say a hotdog is the worst thing you can consume.
Sorry for the preaching but the majority of people I see and photograph are overweight and I am genuinely concerned.

| ->> I hike or ski every week, usually 5 (ski) to 20 (hike) miles on average, but the caveat is my pack weighs roughly 40 pounds. A vacation is a hike in Glacier or the Bob, which runs 60 to 70 miles. I like to walk. I hate running. I eat like a pig, but rarely gain weight. |

->> I'm with Chuck. Why run when you have a working vehicle?
Regardless of what your chosen form of exercise is, you just have to make it your priority or you'll never find time for it. It's easy to find excuses - work being the easiest - but you just have to do it. |

->> NIc,
I am in the midst of training for a 1/2 marathon on May 12. My training schedule has me running about 30 miles per week with rest days on Monday and Friday. (I am on the far far downside of 40). It's always hard to incorporate running into the day, especially with the 'Spring' we are having here in the North East.
But, I make it happen. Without running, I would not be fun to be around. |

->> Hey John, long time no talk.
I used to run a lot too - maybe not 50 miles - until i got hurt playing soccer with kids 1/3 my age about 6 years ago.
So recently I sprained my back and went to the doctor. He had the nerve to tell me that I was carrying too much weight. My wife has been complaining about me carrying my heavy lens for hours at football games and then dragging a 50 plus pound Tamrac rolling case into the house. So my doctor for 15 years, an older hold no punches Jewish old time doctor, brings his head down so he can look over his reading glasses at me and said: "I'm not talking about your cameras, I am talking about the weight stuck in your gut." So there I had it - I couldn't have said any better myself.
So I am slowly changing my diet into something more sensible and I could find a lesser impact sport than running as I've been warned about that as well. I ran for 20 years and everything cracks in the morning.
Hey we should get together and write a book fitness for fotographers over forty |

| ->> I used to run races from 5k to half marathon when I had a staff position on a small newspaper. It was difficult, but I managed to get in 50-60 training miles each week. Of course that was in the days of film cameras, no internet, etc. I don't race anymore, but I still run 30 or so miles a week. You just have to make it a priority appointment in your day. Put it in your schedule and do not let anything interfere. Your health is far more important than any fotos you might miss (if you're pushin' daisies you can't take the fotos anyway, right?). It helps that I have a wife who follows the same policy, she gets in about 40 minutes a day of quality exercise, usually on her stationary bike. We are both in our early 40's. I do have to admit that between work, volunteer activities, kids schedules, and my wife's exercise, it sometimes means running as early as 5 am or as late as 9 pm. |

->> I don't run but spend about 6 hours a week with a Nordic track and a stair stepper. After herniating two discs after shooting at Dover all weekend and walking around I had a simple slip from a curb with all my gear on my shoulders. I never want to deal with that agony again so I undertook a pretty strict program after months of PT.
I only wish that all those efforts made me a svelte looking individual but at 42 I understand that my body is not ever going to look like a 22 year old...
I guess I noticed that the work paid off on a recent vacation with my family to the grand canyon. My teen aged boys struggled with my gear when I was walking with my camera to take pictures...when I had the gear I was fine...and carried it most of the hike.... |

->> On a more serious note. I have changed my diet and do excersize on a somewhat regular basis. The diet part has made the biggest change in my life in the last few years. I cut out all the sugars and white breads, what a difference! And it's not that I was overweight, I just feel so much better now.
Dirk, how you been. Had dinner with James thursday. |

->> A one on one training session with a trainer that kicks my tail for forty five-minutes plus twenty on the bike right afterwards - plus cardio on the days I cn swing it - plus - the hardest part from four soda's a day down to one every couple of days. Drinking more water and ice tea.
Dropped 15 pounds in a heartbeat. Feel stronger than I have in a while. IF it ever warms up I plan to hit the road on my bike for at least an hour a day. |

->> Hi Nic,
I'm not over 40 yet, almost. I try to run everyday during lunch and have done so since college. My miles vary but it's anywhere between 4 to 8 miles depending on much time I have. I've completed several marathons but my marathon days are over since the training is ardous and taxing.
I work at a university full-time and have flexible hours, which makes it easier for me to have a regular exercise routine. Running is a great way to stay fit and healthy, especially since I take advantage of the free meals provided to the media. |

->> Run?
50 miles per week??????
RUN!
I stopped running when I graduated from high school leaving the track team.
Instead, I bicycle (16 1/2 miles of hills yesterday), sea kayak, walk with my dogs, and work my ass off taking care of the land my wife insisted we get for her horses. Notice I didn't meantion that I ride horses!
But there's a good thing about horses that I didn't know I was learning by living in the Washington DC area for so long. What did I learn? Surprisingly, I became an expert in manure management!
So if you want to stay in shape, just deal with shi..., no no no no I can say that. Just deal with manure.
Grin. |

->> Hey Walter...I thought that Washington DC was the manure capital of world? :)
I used to bicycle all the time. I hate running! I don't have the time any more to do any of that but really need to make the time. Having recently turned 50, and knowing that I'm carrying some extra weight around, I need to excercise more.
I know that my biggest problem, and I think that it goes with this type of job is poor eating habits. Eating on the run, picking up junk food because it's easier/quicker, etc.
Another problem...it seems the older I get, the less will power I have. |

| ->> How about a photographer weight loss challenge?, sort of like a football pool, whoever lose x amount of weight or percentage of original weight in a specified amount of time, gets the cash. I know I could definitely lose about 20lbs and I need the incentive. My wife cooks too damn good, and with me out shooting all the time those are my my biggest obstacles right now. |

->> I don't run because of bad knees, both of them. The knees can't take the pounding that running does to them. However I do cycle as much as possible. Of course some days I get home so late I want to do nothing but eat and go to bed. But the day after I do get out on the bike I always have more energy and feel really good.
With the crazy weather we have had around here so far this spring I have not had a lot of chances to get out. About an hour ago I got back from a 23KM (14 mile) ride and some of the tree covered trails I like to take still have have snow, well it's more like ice, on them. Makes for some tough biking. |

->> I'm 55, and my wife and I bought a treadmill late last fall. I could run 9 or 10 miles when I was 30, I was quite proud of myself because I had pretty severe asthma as a kid and was told all the things I couldnt do. I still have asthma, but modern medicine has come a long way. I can't use that as a excuse.
I had allergies that twice a year would kick my ass and my running program. Great excuse,too. I've started using the treadmill. Not trying to run - I'm trying to get the resperation up and work the heart. Slowly but surely it's making a difference.
Started to loose a few pounds. Next will be a education on the 5 year bow flex that I still don't think I've ever used properly or I'll go get some free weights.
For those of us over 50, keep this in mind: Every hour of exercise extends our lives by 2 hours.
Whoever said making excuses is easy was right. In the words of Larry the cable guy, just go "get 'er done." |

->> Nic,
I bike anywhere from 12 to 15 miles a day before work. I find that it has taken off quite amount of stress on my knees, which of course are getting older by the day. I am 44 and feel lucky enough to keep up with the younger shooters on big assignments.
