I think that John Harrington's blog
http://photobusinessforum.blogspot.com/ is great. Also the strobist himself should get some props at http://strobist.blogspot.com/ Then you have Leslie Burns-Dell’Acqua's http://www.burnsautoparts.com/blog/

And the best one of all is the one my guinea pig has called TuffyThePig.com at

->> Blogs, blogs, blogs.

Personally, I think most "blogs" are useless. There's nothing inherently special about a "blog," it's just another web site. And a poorly organized/formatted one at that.

Anyone with truly useful information usually manages to organize their thoughts in a way to make the information a lot easier to navigate and access.

www.robgalbraith.com is one of my favorite photo web sites. If Rob was a little lazier, he could put his info into a template at blogspot or someplace and have a "blog" (woo hoo!), and ride the web's latest fad. Thankfully, he has a somewhat better organized site, and lots of great information.

That being said, Mitchell, your post is an interesting one and the Reuters blog is a good example of when this format works. Instead of just one person's pontification, this is a collection of stories from a variety of viewpoints and is at least entertaining and interesting.

->> I post to my blog nearly daily. And I label each post accordingly (ie- editorial, sports, portrait, etc).

So I was thinking about that the other day and I got to wondering if blogs are going to replace portfolios?

I mean wouldn't a daily photo blog give a prospective employer a much more practical idea of what a given person is able to produce on a daily basis? I mean that's compared to a set of 20 photos that represent the very best that person has made over a (potentially) very long period of time?

To keep my post semi-on-topic here are a handful of my fav blogs:

A blatant plug of my own site to increase the links that search engines look for to enhance the chances that my web site will be top of the list. Grin.

Blogs are not just another website. They are much more personal and give you information that regular websites don't have. A blog is like reading a columnist at a newspaper. Blogs don't have restrictions that mainstream media have. They can give you a first person account of a process like photography that can be invaluable. Blogs tend to be unedited and unfiltered which can work for or against it. I'm new to the world of blogging and have come to embrace it, warts and all. Drop by my blog:

->> Chuck --

You're right.

To wit:

DEFINE:
most (–adjective, superl. of much or many with more as compar.) "in the greatest quantity, amount, measure, degree, or number"
Source:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/most

Further, note here:

The NYT (
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2006/11/30/the-govs-hear-from-google/) reported on Eric Schmidt's remarks to the Republican Governors Association back in November of 2006, where he said "...Google now estimates that the average blog is read by one person."

That said, I for one am pleased (and humbled) by the attention my blog has gotten. According to Google Analytics, since starting my daily blog in January (my first blogging experience was on behalf of Amazon.com back in October), I have averaged 20,000+ visitors each month. Most visitors come during the week, just under 1k a day, and growing, weekends are slower, but only by about 30%. So, I am happy to report that it's doing well.

In addition, you noted:
"There's nothing inherently special about a "blog," it's just another web site. And a poorly organized/formatted one at that. "

Yes, I agree, for the most part. A blog is a vehicle to deliver information, and just as it's so easy to do for informative commentary, so too is it for that blog that has just one reader, according to Schmidt. And, no doubt, the ones with just a few readers are more than likely poorly organized.

Further, you wrote:
"Anyone with truly useful information usually manages to organize their thoughts in a way to make the information a lot easier to navigate and access. "

Agreed again. I think, however, your post was dismissive of the intent of the message, which was to find out people's favorites. I am glad to have been listed, and I spend a fair amount of time each day thinking of new topics that dovetail with the message points in my book, or are about the news of the day from a photo-business standpoint.

These are among the ones I check every day:
http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ - Baltimore Sun Photojournalist's David Hobby site on how to be a genius on lighting on location, on the fly, cheaply
http://wikiprophoto.blogspot.com/index.html - Stan Rowin's Photo Business blog
http://danheller.blogspot.com/ - Dan Heller's Photo Business Blog
http://rising.blackstar.com/ - Black Star's Blog
http://www.photoattorney.com/ - Photo Attorney Carolyn Wright's Blog
http://blogs.adobe.com/ - Adobe's Creatives that blog frequently
http://www.burnsautoparts.com/blog/ - Creative Consultant Leslie Burn's blog

I also hit up a number of the others that are already listed above.

The above-mentioned strobist is way cool and informative.

PS — If you want to start a blog, I suggest GoDaddy. Way cheap and easy to use.
