->> Joe,

AP did not get rid of 4 people, they eliminated 4 positions.

"Lyon confirmed the names of the four regional editors whose jobs are being cut. It has not been determined if any of them will be moved to the new positions, Lyon says"

->> Good point, Bill, but a little institutional knowledge still leads to the conclusion that this isn't good. And keep in mind that AP only moved to the regional photo editing deal a few years ago, if I'm not mistaken. To make yet another big change like that isn't necessarily a bad sign, but it's not great, either.

Speaking of PDN, they did a pretty good article a couple of years ago about the changes wire services are undergoing. A PDF of it is here, ironically linked off Getty's website:

gettyimages.mediaroom.com/file.php/96/pdn_jan2005.pdf

And to echo Randy, Cliff is easily one of the classier people in this crazy biz. Super-duper-duper nice guy and a pleasure to deal with. I wish he and the others the best of luck.

Mullett = Dave Martin, AP Atlanta...and one heck of a shooter by the way.

Oh and as a side note...if I recall the story correctly...his nickname has nothing to do with the way he wears his hair.

->> Sorry; Mullett, AKA Dave Martin was the longtime AP photographer in Alabama before he stepped up to become the regional Photo ed for the south. Among many other great photos, he shot an awesome pic during Hurricane Georges of a houseboat in Key West exploding in the waves as the residents run towards him, I think it was the cover of the NPPA member guide for that year. He is also famous for some of his stories, which I cannot repeat here, or I would surely get flagged, and maybe even booted. And I understand he started the original shrimp boil at the Bama-Auburn game.

->> I do not know the other editors personally, but I do know Dave Martin very well.

When I started at the now-defunct Birmingham Post-Herald he was THE man in the region. In his years in Montgomery at the AP he took many young shooters under his wing to teach them the ropes. Dave was, and I hope still is, a great asset to the AP. He helped build a lot of loyalty to the agency.

As Cavaretta mentions, he was Mr. Hurricane for the AP for many years. Most recently he was in New Orleans for Katrina. He made a lot of good pictures while there and helped a lot of AP shooters get their pictures on the wire.

Dave taught me a lot about doing what it takes to get the picture. And I don't mean illegal or sneaky. I mean good, old-fashioned hard work -- show up early, stay late, work hard. File Early...File Often!

Dave will, I hope, be a great asset to AP in another position or to another agency.

One thing about Dave is I have never heard him say he got a great pix after a game but the next morning he always has a great pix in the paper.

->> I completely agree with Randy and G.J....Cliff Schiappa gave me my first professional photography assignment, way back in the mid 80's. I often wonder what would have happened in my career if I didn't get that first opportunity. He is a consummate professional on top of being a terrific person. AP will have lost a representative that any news organization should be proud to have on their staff.
