->> Are you looking to grow professionally? Hear from expert speakers? Get thoughts about career advancements from hiring managers from around the country? Gain constructive feedback on your portfolio?
If so, then come to the 2007 Southern Short Course. It will be held at the Holiday Inn Choo Choo in Chattanooga, Tennessee from April 12-15th. Learn from industry experts through a curriculum written by a Pulitzer Prize winning educator. Hear the faculty talk about pictures during the open judging.
Attend interactive breakout sessions over four days… no more boring lectures... audience participation is welcome.
Student Day:
What should I do to prepare for the road ahead? What can I expect from my first job? How do I succeed in any working conditions? What is the difference between job and career? What kids of things can I do to bring home better pictures? How can I improve as a journalist?
Multimedia Day:
Where is multimedia headed? How do you shoot for multimedia? Capture great sound? How can you quickly produce a multimedia piece with software (mostly) found on your laptop? What do editors look for in online portfolios? How do you market yourself online?
Content day:
Need new solutions to everyday challenges? Want to build respect in the newsroom? How do you find fresh story ideas? How can you shoot better sports photos under any circumstance? How do you handle tough times?
Keynote speaker day:
How could we let you leave the conference without inspiration and little kick in the pants?

->> One of the great things about the Holiday Inn Choo Choo is the trolly which takes you to and from downtown. Of course it's only a short walk to all the fun and excitement.
I understand that Dave LaBelle is going to be around too. Perhaps in the breakouts but definately selling the Great Picture Hunt 2. |

->> Hello,
Just checking in and moving this thread back up to the top. I handle the registration for SSC and want you to attend. The SSC is always a great educational(not to mention fun) weekend and a way to connect with folks in the industry. This years SSC in Chattanooga, Tenn. will be great. Hope you can make it.

->> Another great reason to attend this cool event is to see our own beloved Grover Sanschagrin speak. Grover has put together a wonderful presentation that is required viewing by any photographer who has a website or wishes to have one.
Grover is such a draw that there are rumors flying around the country that Orlando's own Gary Bogdon might make the trip just to hang out.
PS: If you would like for Grover to look at your portfolio make sure you buy him a nice glass of tequila first. Trust me. |

->> Hey Magin: you coming to SSC?
By the way, The Chattanooga Times Free Press is doing the Saturday eye opener... Bill Fortney and I had a great time helping the staff make selections for their pictures of the year in December.
That staff has some great shooters on the rise -- Ashlie White, Angela Lewis and Kathleen Greeson -- who are also helping us out greatly in Nooga Town. |

Is that such a wise idea? I mean noone ever tells the truth after drinking tequila......least that's what I heard and contrary to popular belief the worm gives really good advice. |

| ->> On that note Ill be reviewing portfolios at the Green Lantern on Evans street tommorrow. If you get there before the Red Sox game reviews will cost one pint. After the game one pint. During the game.......oh that's gonna cost you. |

->> To all the students.....I know the portfolio reviews are very informal but go in there like youre applying for a job. Be fully prepared with not only a cd but with your resume and the whole nine. Take some time to think about what you want to do and where you plan to go in the next 6 months 1 year and even 20 years. And have fun while youre at it.

->> I just sent in my entries for the contest. Does anyone know how quickly the website will be updated after the conference is over? Will we receive any kind of communication about the results before hand? Thanks for the info in advance.
Wish I could be there for the event, but with such a small staff, it is hard to get away all the time. Tommy, don't go too overboard on the beers. I still need your love and support at the UIL State Track meet in May.

->> A couple of new things with Southern being only one week away...
1) Southeastern Camera of Raleigh, N.C. is joining the vendors on Saturday. The owner, Tony Mansfield, is a former photojournalist and a classmate of mine from my first photojournalism. He will be bringing numerous goodies for sale including: Cameras, lenses, cf cards, bags, expo discs. Stop in and see him -- they wheel and deal!
2) Virginia POY runner-up, Mark Gormus of the Richmond Times Dispatch will be joining Greg Kahn and myself during the Thursday night Community Coffee House breakout session for students.
Also, there are a few rooms availible at the Holiday Inn Choo Choo due to folks from another convention (taking place across town) cancelling. If interested I'd reserve quickly! |

And I couldn't agree more with Frizzelle about Todd Bennett's lighting knowledge. His tutorial and demonstration at SSC last year about lighting high school gyms was extremely informative. I still have pages worth of notes.
See you all in just a few days!! |
