Mounting a camera to the hood of a car?

->> I'm curious if anyone here as any advice on how to mount a camera on the hood of a car? I'd like to get a portrait of a taxi driver using a remote setup on his hood as he drives through the city of brotherly love, but I'm at a loss for safe methods of doing this..
Will it even be possible to do on a college student's budget? |

->> You might also try using a superclamp on a partially popped hood. I would not do this at highway speeds, but depending on the hood, the gap should give you enough space to secure the clamp. During the summer in Manhattan I often see cabs driving with partially popped hoods to help cool their engines.
You'd also need a towel or something similar between the hood and the clamp to keep it from damaging the car and probably a safety cable of some kind as well. |

->> I wouldn't use a clamp on a hood. Sheetmetal is actually kind of thin (saves weight...increases mileage), and most hoods are actually multiple pieces of sheetmetal sandwiched together wtih nothing in between them, especially on the edges. This adds to the rigidity of the hood. If you put a clamp on these parts of the hood, when you tighten the clamp, the first thing that will happen is the sheetmetal will compress and will leave dents.
If you want to mount a camera directly on the hood, use a platform that uses suction cups. |

->> Peter DaSilva's rig is the right way to do it, though looking at the pictures I can't see a safety cable. It's not quite as important on the hood of a car as in the rafters of a gym, but a steel safety cable should still be used.
As for the superclamp on a popped hood, don't try it. You will destroy the sheet metal, and although there is a safety latch to prevent it, you still have a change of the hood flying open and causeing some real damage to your camera, the car, and your body. |
