->> What is apple's processor speed bump trend? is it every x-months?
I'm just looking to jump into a mac pro and was looking for some folks who have an apple crystal ball to give me their prediction.
thanks in advance!

->> I'm curious about this as well Garrett. I predict (without any shred of certainty) that it'll be April 24, perfectly coinciding with my b-day. HA!
Yeah, I'm waiting for the next bump as well. |

->> Since Apple switched to Intel chips, their update cycle is going to be more closely tied to Intel product roll outs and updates than when Apple was using Motorola/Freescale chips. While the Mac Pro may get a small speed bump sometime in the near future, the big news will be sometime late in the second half of the year when Intel rolls out their new 45nm chips code named Penryn. The Xeon family which Apple uses in it's Mac Pros may not get updated until early 2008 with the new 45nm chip design. As far as I can tell Apple is using the fastest Xeon Woodcrest chips currently available.

->> New MacPro towers, OS 10.5, & PhotoShop CS3 should be released before the NAB conference in mid-april.
Just save $60 a day for the next 60 days and you'll be ready! |

->> I think it will be a bit longer, some time in April though. Intel has only begun shipping the T7700 and T7800 versions of it's Core 2 Duo "Merom" processors, with clock speeds of 2.40GHz and 2.6GHz. The 2.16 GHz Macbook pro's use the T7400's and the 2.33GHz Macbook Pro's use the T7600 version. In addition, apple is going to be switching the MBP's over to LED based backlights, which produce more even backlighting, last longer and use less battery power.
My applecare is up Feb. 20th, with my luck I'll need a new computer before the new ones comes out. |
