Clip Contest - Weird Math?!!!

->> Ok - first of all I have to admit I'm Dustin Snipe's #1 Fan - only because I don't want Donald Miralle to win yet another body from Canon...
That being said - let me make this CRYSTAL clear: I think Miralle is clearly in a league of his own and one of the best sports photographers in our nation - but he's also on staff at a large corporation which provides him w/ gear - so for that purpose alone I like to root from the underdog...
Therefore I must admit to cringing when I saw him win the "Shooter's Choice Award" tonight... man I was rooting for Dustin....
BUT
How in the world is Miralle in Second place? Is this a new BCS/sportsshooter controversy?
Here are the stats as I currently read them:
Dustin has 124 first place votes, 82 2nd place votes, and 51 3rd place votes...
Donald exceeds him in every single one of those categories...
he's got 164 first place votes (more), 90 2nd place votes (more), and 64 3rd place votes (more.)
So what am I missing here?
Again - I'm voting againt Miralle getting (I think his third free body from Canon) YET - I can't seem to find out why in the world he's not in the lead... he seems to have earned it hands down... perhaps he can start his own yearly scholarship for the best upcoming student photographer (and hand down the camera to them that he earns every year.)
Bert / Grover? Please set me straight! v

->> Vince - the points you see there are not how contest winners are chosen, so your math is a wee bit off.
Points are awarded each month as follows:
40 - Shooter's Choice
30 - First Place
20 - Second Place
10 - Third Place
The number of votes cast each month will always vary. We simply keep track of those numbers (and display them on the leaderboard) as a way to break ties, if any exist.
Sometimes a person can win first place in a category with 20 votes, and sometimes a person can first place in a category with 80 votes... still, the result is the same - they win the same exact amount of points no matter how many people vote.
Get it? |

->> First congrats to everyone that placed.
My understand is that Shooter's Choice is 40, first place vote is 30 points, second is 20 points, and three is 10 points. The votes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, would only be used to break a tie. But since Dustin has won points over all, he is the winner, however Donald has more votes. It’s possible that Miralle got more votes when he won, but he just didn’t win as often.
I guess it’s kinda like how Bush won the electoral vote, but didn't receive more popular votes.
But I could be totally wrong on this. |

->> It's nice to have a BCS/sportsshooter controversy, I say we have a playoff, er, shoot off. One day..."a day in the life" sort of thing...for all the marbles. Miralle vs. Snipes - and I'm sure there will be a rematch again next year.
Congrats to both - I'm in awe! |

->> And about that title "Midnight Run"
Impossible
At midnight the full moon is at its zenith.
This image was clearly shot earlier in the evening.
So it should be called "7 PM Run"
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Beautiful photograph Donald. We won't take off points for the title. Grin. |

->> it works just like we vote for a president. the person with the most votes doesn't always win. unfortunately, we didn't get a dustin snipes in the white house.
dustin rocks. he also took part in the first SSA. what a difference SSA makes. |

| ->> So wouldn't it make more sense to post the number of points on the leaderboard instead of number of votes? It seems like the number of votes is just a raw number that means very little to us... |

->> As an up and coming (hopefully) Snipes protoge, congrats to him for finally taking down the big dog! Hopefully it will be me in a couple more years taking down Dustin!
PS Dustin: If you ever need to get rid of old canon gear to make room for all the new stuff you win, you have my number... |

Donald Miralle is not a great photographer because he works for a big agency that gives him lots of gear and other resources. Donald Miralle works for a big agency that gives him lots of gear and other resouces because he is a great photographer.... |
