| ->> I'm must curious...we read a lot here about how dim and crappy the lighting is at a particular stadium or arena. So, what sports venues actually have very good lighting for night shooting or indoor events? Which are the best? |

->> Here is a vote for Indoor: Bryce Jordan Center At Penn State and Outdoor: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh.
I bet Canon shooters there could use a TE if they wanted.

More on-topic....Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City has the best light of any NCAA arena I've shot in. |

| ->> Redbird Arena at Illinois State is pretty nice. I can shoot basketball at 1/400 at a 1000 ISO with our new Canons. Even with an old Nikon D1h I can shoot at 1/400 at 1600 ISO with just a little level work in photoshop and have nice pictures. Its not perfect but compared to some of the caves I've been in I feel lucky. |

->> Louisiana Tech's Joe Aillet Stadium changed lights in mid-season in preparation for a ESPN HD game in December. The last two games of the season . . . 1/500th at 800 ASA 4.0 at the 50, 2.8 in both endzones. I'm sure there are better lit stadia, but we're happy after coming out of the dark ages. And Tech's Thomas Assembly Center lighting mix was designed by the building manager, a master photographer (imagine that!), in 1986. Balanced color and all for the TV of that era, which with the brightness was lagniappe for us still photographers. As the lighting has aged and as more, bigger, better arenas have been built the TAC does not stand out as much as in the past. We beg for the TV lighting levels to be turned on for every game now.
A PS--Don't you hate it when home teams want to shut off the lights for opening introductions and it takes the customary 10-15 minutes for the lighting to return to normal. All you strobe folks disregard. |

->> Best indoor place I've ever shot... Horton Fieldhouse at Illinois State (during the daylight hours). Yes, Redbird Arena is ok - it replaced Horton.
Horton has glass block from about 10feet up to the roof on the south end and glass block from about half way up to the roof on the north end. It takes a little bit to get used to the oft back lit conditions, but after you do it's just awesome.
BTW, In Redbird I'm getting a 500th at 1250 ISO and a 2.8. I guess that's about the same as Jamey stated above. |

->> I thought the SuperDome (1/650 @ F/2.8, ISO 800) was great.
My worst outdoor: Florida International University's Community Stadium (just about to be rebuilt) west of Miami: At best, 1/200 @ F/2.8, ISO 1600. I strapped on a 550EX for the last game and no one complained.
I haven't experienced a worse lighted indoor arena than at UCF. |

->> I was thinking about this topic just the other day. Because I've noticed that good light is very subjective.
I used to complain about the light at both of the local JUCO gyms. But since I switched to shooting games there with f/2 or faster lenses only. I've been impressed by how good quality the light actually is. See the lead image on my member page for an example.
I was also really impressed by how good the lighting was at the Wichita, Kan., State University gym when both my local teams made it to the region championships there last spring. Take a look at the first image of my sports portfolio at http://sports.phojonick.com/ for an example. |

->> Believe it or not, I found the MCI/Verizon/SponsorX Center in DC to have some decent lighting, especially compared to the equally cavernous Staples Center and some other smaller NCAA tourney venues I've shot at in the past couple years.

| ->> The John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario is a very well lit arena ... 1/640th @ f2.8 set to 800 ISO. Depending on the angle of the shot, it's possible to pretty much freeze the puck with the available light. |

->> Going to agree with Will and say Angel Stadium is very nicely lit. I was disappointed when they moved the high school football champs from there to Home Depot Center which has so-so lighting for being as new as it is. The Jenny Craig Pavillion (aka: The Slim Gym) at USD is still up at 1600, but the light LOOKS good and is very even.

->> The Peoria Civic Center's Carver Arena has new lights and 1/400 @ f/2.8 @ ISO 800 is about 1/3 stop under. Finally, all the lights are the same, replacing the potpourri of lights that had evolved over a number of years.
There is also a grade school gym in the area with new fluorescent lights that is similar to Carver. |

->> I can vouch for Peoria's Civic Center also... although for a basketball configuration, they seem to leave some of the end lights off, decreasing the available light a smidge. We had to turn up our 8 strobe packs to half power from their previous quarter power setting because of some nasty ghosting. Recycle time has suffered a bit...
Not that I'm complaining, mind you. |

Fantastic light when the TV lights are on and no color shifts. 1/500 F/2.8 at 800 ISO. |
