How to open RAW file on Photoshop CS??
Robert Benson, Photographer

->> Sounds like a simple question, but its kicking my ass. And I've read previous posts in the forum, but none of them directly answer the question.

I have Photoshop CS (not CS2). Just moved to that from 7.0. I want to open Canon Raw files. I downloaded the Raw plugin from Adobe (2.0), and dumped the file into the plug ins folder within the Adobe program file. That didn't work, so I tried 2.1, 2.4 and a few other Raw versions.

If I try to open a Canon Raw file I get the error message:

"could not complete your request because this version of Photoshop does not supply the services required by this plug-in module"

What's going on?

->> Which Canon RAW file are you trying to open? Adobe Camera Raw vers 2 will not open newer Canon raws (5D, D30 etc). Those require ACR 3.X, which only works with CS2 and Bridge.

->> From what I am reading you might have a Camera not supposed by that Plug-in so check out what camera you got bc the RAW plug-in 2.4 supports EOS 20D, EOS-1Ds Mark II and the 3.3 for Photoshop CS2 supports Canon EOS 5D,EOS 1D Mark II N, Canon EOS 20Da, RAW plug-in supports 3.4 Canon EOS 30D.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

->> Yes, I am sorry but looks like you need to get Photoshop CS2 to open your RAW file, check out the Adobe web site RAW plug-in supports for Canon cameras, that’s where I got the information from.

->> The 1D Mk2n is not supported by version of the 2 of the plug-in. You need CS2 or you could download the beta of Adobe Lightroom, their next generation photo editing app. The beta will be free until Adobe releases it as a commercial product. The folks that have tried it are pretty happy with it. Lightroom does require the latest in OS and a lot processor power, so if you are working on an older computer it may not be right for you.

->> You can open them in the DPP software that came with the camera. You then can convert to tiff or jpg. The DPP software has some great toning tools. Download the latest, it really works nicely. Extra step, but you can batch process.
