What's Your New Year's Resolution?
Rodrigo Pena, Photographer
Palm Desert | CA | USA | Posted: 4:15 AM on 01.01.07
->> I've put on some weight this year, so natch, I'm going to resolve to do at least 20 situps every day. To most of you that may be nothing, but for me it's a start. I plan to move up to about 60 in the next few months. I did 60 tonight, but I know I'll be sore tomorrow, hence the 20.

Photographically, I want to do at least one video or audio slideshow per week. I'm still learning multimedia and I need lots of practice.

What's your New Year's Resolution?

->> My plans aren't as aggressive as Rodrigo, but they do involve slideshows... I plan on doing at least one per month. I will probably have to find the stories myself and convince the higher-ups at work that it's worthwhile for me to spend time doing them, but that shouldn't be too big a problem.

In 2006 I started working on some of Reed Hoffman's New Year's suggestions from last year:
http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1508

Most notably, I bought an ExpoDisc and have started using custom WB whenever I shoot indoors without flash. I have also started using gels on my flash, and multiple flashes once in a while. Oh and I also shoot RAW+jpg whenever I have an assignment that isn't on a tight deadline so I can work on the RAW files on my personal laptop and get the most out of those files.

For more ideas on how to re-invent yourself and make yourself more valuable to whomever pays you, here are some great ideas from SS member Jens Dresling on "Staying Sharp":
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-7893-8285

From the story:

"To actually make these things [expanding his shooting skills and techniques] happen, Dresling has developed the habit of assigning himself a specific project for each year. One year, for example, the project was to learn how to use remote camera setups and find ways to incorporate them into his daily work. Another year he set out to improve his portraits for the newspaper by expanding his use of portable off-camera lighting equipment.

Dresling's practice of giving himself specific challenges goes back to the 1980s, when POLFOTO switched from black-and-white to color. It was clear that any photographer who didn't master color would be left behind.

'You have to set a goal for yourself every year,' Dresling says, explaining what that experience taught him. 'I do it partly because it's fun, but also to keep myself on my toes because if you let everything roll over you, you'll be out of business in a short period of time.'"

->> I've taken a long hiatus from photography, but I'm trying to shoot more. I haven't been into journalism for two years now, but I have a lot of fine art background and want to explore that. Being a full-time student (18 units) plus working, there isn't a whole lot of time to play, but I'm going to make a point of going out once a week and shooting a few rolls (gasp! whats a roll?) of 120 on my Rollei.
