Looking for a good pair of shoes

| ->> Hey everyone, maybe this is a weird question....what type of shoes do you wear at events? I'm normally a sneaker guy but they don't really protect my feet from water or snow or cold, so I was curious if anyone wears a hiking style shoe or something similar. If so, what kind? This isn't life or death but I'd like to know where to start looking. |

->> Check out Merrell's line - http://www.merrellboot.com/
I have a pair of the Chameleon II Gore-Tex XCRs, which translates to Gore-Tex-lined sneakers. The only time my feet have gotten wet in them was when I shot a football game the night before Thanksgiving this year, and then only because there was 3-4 inches of standing water on the sidelines.
If you're going to be outdoors in crappy conditions (like that game) more often, they have a hiking shoe version of the shoe. They're on the expensive side ($100+ a pair), but well worth the cost. |

These work really well for me. They last a long time and you can resole them. I'm on my second sole. They are warm and dry and relatively comfortable. They're a litttle heavy, but not bad. Top quality, made in the USA and the price reflects it. Worth every penny. The street price is about $180. |

Look no further than this FINE shoe store (Chuck).

I made sure my daughter took a pair for her first year in college...and yup, guess it was a little cold and snowy last week in Utah. On potentially muddy grass football fields I wear these shoes as it has ocassionally rained in Hawaii...and without my expressed permission. |

->> I've worn LL Bean GoreTex hiking boots, the low cut ones not the calf high variety, for many years. Like Bryan mentioned with the Merrill boots, they are not cheap at just over $100/pr but well worth the money. They are relatively lightweight, durable, and they keep my feet dry...always.
I think that you've brought up a subject that many of us need to think more about. Our job dictates that we spend many hours every day on our feet in a variety of conditions. Add to that the stress on the body of carrying X number of pounds of gear and the abuse to one's back and legs, feet, etc. is considerable. Many people don't realize how much wearing a high quality pair of shoes, with good arch support can lessen the aches and pains that we are prone to in our job.
Sorry to sound like someone's mother or doctor but all of you younger men and women out there....wait until you get to be my age (close to 50) and you will wish that you had spent a few more dollars on good and practicle instead of cheap ("I'm just going to tear them up anyway") or fashionable. |

->> While i have heard of some of these brands i myself am a Merrell man.
I have three pairs one hiking boot, one sude comfort shoe, and one cross trainer so to speak. The boots and the sude shoe i have owned for 3 years and they are like new.
The Shoes, are new as of August and are perfect for kicking around in.
The boots, i water proofed before wearing them and they have yet to get wet. Very very warm for the winter.
Same goes for the sude shoes.
The cross trainers are mesh with a rubber like coating and are very well vented.
Highly recommend these guys.

I couldn't resist, as a friend who "got" me tonight said, "that was a slam dunk". but seriously I will go with the keen crowd here. never heard of them before until a friend "forced" me to buy two different kinds on sale (half price) best thing I've ever done. they are comfy and hold up in all kinds of weather. check 'em out. they have all kinds of styles...and we, as photographers know it's all about STYLING!!!! |

These are what I wear:
http://www.bellevilleshoe.com/product.php?current_product=8
GoreTex, the works. Feet stay dry and warm in the winter (including are 12+ inches of recent snow), and are also very comfortable in the summer.
Best, most comfortable boots I've ever worn. |

->> gore-tex is the way to go to stay dry....but, as you mentioned, if you step in more than 3-4 inches of water...you're sunk. (pun)
I'm getting two pairs of gore-tex socks for Christmas. A full 12-inches of keeping my feet dry.
Your shoes may get wet and muddy...but they can be dried on the back porch later. |

->> Chuck,
You walk ON them?
Interesting... I've personally taken to making reporters give me piggy-back rides everywhere... once you get a bit, bridle, and reins for them, they're remarkably easy to train... Depending on how big your paper is, sometimes you can even get the city desk to provide one to carry YOU, and a second to use as a pack-animal.

->> I bought a pair of Asolo boots when i lived in south bend, indiana, and i could stand in 2 feet of snow for hours w/o getting my feet wet or cold. They are awesome. You can usually find them at your local outdoor store. They are a bit pricey, but as a wise man said " spend you money on your shoes and your matress becaue you are always in one or the other."
http://www.asolo.com/default.asp?l=3
Also, just as important as a great pair of shoes are the socks. I wear wool socks year round. They pull moisture away from your feet, so if they so get wet its not nearly as bad as cotton socks. They keep your feet warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I have many pairs from thin to heavy. I usually buy smartwool socks.
https://www.smartwool.com/default.cfm
no matter what boots you get, get a good pair of synthetic wool socks.

->> I bought these when they made Outside magazine top shoe pick last year.
They are hands down the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn, and I have crossed a couple creeks with these and still haven't gotten a wet foot yet. The tongue even shapes to the top of your foot to eliminate pressure points, A big plus for me. And they are LIGHT!!!

->> shoes?
who needs shoes?
a brief monk story...
after taking off my sandles before entering a Budist Temple, one monk, whos portrait i was supposed to be getting, said to me...
"those who always wear shoes are doomed to walk an earth paved with rubber"
how true.
to answer your question though, i am a fan of timberlands "outdoor performance" hiking sneaker.
light, comfy, and most importantly WATERPROOF. got my pair for 40 bucks.
however, when it gets real cold and snowy, i throw on my ll bean classic leather boots...my editor calls 'em the "glacier boots" because in the time it takes me to put them on a glacier has creeped by our office. |

Special note for the ladies-- the Keen Seattle is perfect for work, though probably not for snow. They're stylish, semi-dressy looking AND you can run in them if you need to. What more can a girl ask for?

->> i've got a a pair of merrells and a pair of north face.. both are waterproof and both are comfy as hell. north face are laceless slip ons that are awesome on cement, dirt, gravel.. pretty much anything and everything. merrells are zip up boots that i like for snow and rain. they have a neoprene back on them so they are really flexible which is great when you're moving around in them all day, and you know, climbing in trees and hanging off overpasses to get that sweet shot. i swear by them and never leave home without them!

That kinda thing matters when you are hiking with 50 lbs of cameras on your back. They are a bit pricy. If I recall, mine were a bit over $200. Well worth it IMO. I wear them all the time.

->> I had all sorts of hiking and mountaineering shoes, but on the end I ended with Adidas Korse GTX. They are not really hiking shoes, but they are nice and warm so standing in snow for few hours doesn't make problems. You can't put crampons on them, but for shooting skiing where I need crampons, I use skiing shoes anyway.
All those "real" mountaineering shoes are usually too heavy and too clumsy (normally I still need to walk quite a lot) for me, so I was pretty happy when I found those Adidas shoes on the end. |
