re-packing a powerbook battery?
Nic Hume, Photographer
Victoria | BC | Canada | Posted: 4:01 PM on 12.05.06
->> the battery for my trusty old 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook is starting to falter.. I get about an hour out of it now, and it's really taken a turn for the worse over the last few weeks...

I'm obviously going to have to buy a new one, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's anywhere reputable to get my OLD battery re-packaged so I can maybe use it as a spare?

Thoughts?

->> Nic - I'm not entirely sure what you're asking here. Are you looking for someone to basically use only the outer casing and electronic components of your battery and replace all the "guts" so it works as new? If that's what you're looking for, I don't think it's possible. New batteries can be found on eBay for $70 or so - I can't imagine what would be involved in fixing a battery, but I think it would probably be pretty pricey and possibly even dangerous.

Good luck!
Zach

->> In Phoenix there is a chain of stores called Batteries Plus. They rebuild a lot of different battery packs like Quantum, and have batteries for lots of things in house. If the case can be separated, they can probably do something, or maybe you can.

->> I read that the batteries can be re-packed ... the only problem reported could be soldering the leads. If not soldered properly the cells can heat up and burn/blow up.

If you look around the internet, there are coupons for the site. Usually 10-20% off.
Note, it did not fit as well as the original battery. It fell out once or twice, which was easily fixed with gaffer tape. No problems since the tape modification.
