->> Hi,
Since I received a TON of emails regarding this image, I thought I'd do a small batch run at my lab.
This will be the layout I'll use:
http://www.kurtjones.com/FM%20Photos/dolphin-surfer.jpg
If you'd like an 8x10 shipped to you for $20, let me know.
I'll be running a batch at the end of the week.
These will be LAB prints and NOT Ink Jet.
I got alot of emails asking about copies, so here they are...
thanks,
Kurt

->> Most Dolphins are in the 6-8 foot in length.
Based on the curve of the dorsal fin, horizontal fluke, very dark conter-shading and what appears to be a faint outline of a lighter bottom chin and the size I'm inclined to say: Juvenile Orca, or a False Killer Whale.
Either that or dolphin. 100% its mammalian.
The size might be a bit of an illusion due to the defraction of light in the water as well.
My undergrad degree is in marine biology, but that doesn't make me right.
Any other guesses out there? |

->> The snout looks dolphinesque to me.
Once in Ft. Walton Beach. FL I was photographing the beach property on the Gulf of Mexico from a helicopter. Close to shore were a dozen people in the water and right on the other side of a close sandbar were several hammerheads. Plain as day from the air.
The local chamber of commerce calls those things dolphins. Yeah, hammerhead dolphins. Never heard of anyone getting bit there, however.
For the bonus round, name the mayor of Amity. |

I think it's an Orca as well...check similar shape on this pic

It also appears to have the white shading common to Orca's on the frontal area. |

It's a porpoise. There was/is schools of them there all the time.
When I shot Baywatch, they'd race right next to the Scarabs with us at 60 mph...
Thanks for the nice comments.
Got a phone call today from ESPN The Magazine and seems they're interested in running it soon. I'll let everyone know how that works out.
So far I got a list of 10 to print....wow, didn't think this would be that big a deal....... cool though !!!!! ;-)

->> I think it is a pretty big fish, and the surfer is probably not debating what kind of fish it is --- he probably didn't have that much time to really think about it.
BTW - Those are Hammerhead Dolphins --- The Chambers hammers us and hammers us so that we say they are dolphins just to get them to shut-up!;-) |

->> Larry,
I quit my job at a daily paper (Eagle Tribune, No. Andover MA).
Started at the bottom of the food chain as a Film Loader on a really small film.
Worked as a Camera Assistant for 5 years. In that time I moved to LA.
Then I bought a Steadicam System and started Operating.
I sold the 'rig' last year due to back problems and now I work just as a conventional Operator for TV and Movies.
Keeping my fingers crossed, but looks as if I have another series coming up. Jerry Bruckheimer and WB.......fingers crossed.

"Don't ads go in another section of SS? That's a big f#cker. But I don't need a print. Thanks."
I believe he is correct. I vaguely recall reading something that says, "don't...post any SPAM (any type of commercial announcement or advertisement.)..."
Now if only I could remember where I read it...
Hey Beck, you missed one hell of a golf tournament last weekend, buddy...(you lucky $%&@) |

->> Well, if Darren and Robert don't 'need a print', that's just fine.
This was NOT spam or an ad. I was not doing this to get rich.
I make Plenty of $$$ at my regular job. (Feature Film / TV Camera Operator)
It was to get the attention of the about 20 people that emailed me regarding a copy of this image.
I was supprised after the first dozen emails, so after a bit of thought I figured I'd do one run of prints and send em to anyone that wanted one.
I didn't save the emails from the people who emailed me.
So this was to get thier attention and let them know that I would send em a print, but I wasn't going to fund it.
If the powers that be find this as Spam, then by all means delete the thread..........
Easy as that.......

I was at my lumber yard today picking up some supplies and noticed an 8X10 of your image under the plastic counter protector. Just noticed your post here from a few weeks back.
That © logo is what I have on it on my site.
It's only 600x400@72dpi on my site, so the print probably looked like crap.
OR, I sell prints of it on my site, so he may have bought it, as I've sold Hundreds of them, all over the world......
Ask 'em next time........
Thanks again to you as well for looking out for a fellow shooter.

->> Semper Fi David, and ...
On the topic of surfers and sharks, about two months ago we had a 15-foot white shark patroling San Onofre near Nuclear break. We covered it and even ran a shot of this big beast taken by one of the Marine Cobra pilots.
Anyway, as the story goes, these surfers are not too concerned about sharing their break with these sharks ... and that they see them all the time.
Don`t know if it is BS or not, but one surfer said he has patted them on the back before as they swim by!
They said the only reason the sharks were making headlines was that that lady got fatally bitten up near SLO.
No shark expert here, but I guess the white sharks don`t like the taste of humans and are not much of a threat. But tiger sharks are a little less picky and are more prone to eat us.

->> Kurt, I believe I saw your work in a book, I believe it's Extreme Sport Photography by Jonathan Chester, and it made BAM! an impact in my mind, like all photographers have a photographic based memory.
Just earlier today, I was at this visiting professor's talk regarding oceanic ecology, and he showed the Surfer + Swimming Thing photo, and made mention that it was probably due to the ineffectiveness of using shark nets in trying to prevent shark attacks, that dugongs, dolphins and other unintended marine victims drown/starve to death.
I waited for him to finish his presentation, and pointed out that it was a fallacy in his explanation - after all, the majority of the participants were environmental volunteers who know that sharks aren't that bad... unless you meet some of those specific "killer" species.
Don't worry, your name was credited along with the photo - just thought you might want to know how your photo has gone around ;-) |

->> Last March 12, my wife and I were at Huntington Beach and while she was sunning, I was surfing. I saw a school of Porpoises all morning and knew they were close when I was waiting for a wave. I turned to look for my wife on the beach and was blasted in the face by water, and this porpoise surfaced against my leg, swam around the front of my board, we eyed eachother, and then he swam on. Other boarders were pointing and saying that was good luck. It must have been because about five minutes later I got a really good wave!
Of course, I neglected the micro terror second I had seeing a large finned body AT my leg!!!!
Coolest experience ever. That and the sea turtle that head butted me in Hawaii a few years ago because I was in front of his hiding place.
Just as long as nothing takes a tasty bite, I am happy! |

I remember a few years back seeing this image in a magazine - but did'nt see any credit. I remember contacting Kurt, who found out the editor/publisher had used the image without consent or credit.
I believe the issue was eventually sorted out - but Kurt sent me a nice 8x10 for giving him the heads up.

I use snopes all the time to point out internet hoaxes and scams to my friends, and I've received that email at least once a year now and it hasn't changed, neither have the OMG comments either. Now if you click here URL link you can get royalties back from everyone who has viewed it. Bill Gates will pay your royalties within 30 days.
:-)
It's good to know who and where the original came from. As for the new gig, break a leg.
