Fun facts for shooting as you travel/move
Jenny Cecil, Photographer

->> I’ve been trying to register my car in Florida, get a FL license and plates, etc. and I came across these interesting facts about my state.

Clearwater is the U.S. city with the highest number of lightning strikes per capita.

Miami has the distinction of being the first city in America that installed an ATM specifically for in-line skaters.

The sports drink Gatorade is so named because it was developed at the University of Florida, home of the Gators.

Pensacola is home to one of the original Krispy Kremes from the 40's and there is ALWAYS a line out the door. I seriously just came back from there (it’s 10 pm on a Sunday night who buys donuts now?! not me…)

So what are some interesting facts about your city/state incase I ever visit???

The official state BAT is the Virginia big-eared bat. Our General Assembly can't agree on a budget or tansportation solutions but they can agree on a state bat. Go figure.

We beat the Plymouth pilgrims by 13 years. The first permanent (a few failed attempts elsewhere) English (the Spanish were in, ahem, Florida first) settlement was at Jamestown in 1607.

Corydon | IN | USA | Posted: 12:28 PM on 10.17.06
->> Corydon became the second territorial capital of Indiana in 1813, when it was moved here from Vincennes. The old state capitol building is right across the street from the office here at The Corydon Democrat.

Indiana's state constitution was drawn up in here during the summer of 1816. The 43 delegates in charge of writing the state's constitution met inside the Harrison County Courthouse.

Because of the summer heat turning the courthouse into a sauna, the 43 delegates of the state retreated under a giant elm tree, which is now known as the Constitutional Elm tree. Its trunk is still preserved in a big ol' concrete thingie after elm disease killed the tree in the early '20s. I think most, if not all, courthouses in the state use a gavel made from the branches of this elm tree.

Future U.S. President, William Henry Harrison, once lived in Corydon. We borrowed his last name to name our county.

Corydon was the site of the only Civil War battle fought in Indiana.

Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan crossed from Kentucky into Indiana during what became known as "Morgan's Raid." Over 2,500 mounted calvarymen -- with two pieces of artillery -- engaged about 400 members of Corydon's home guard at the Battle of Corydon. The home team got smoked and fell out of the BCS Standings or something and now we celebrate Morgan's Raid. No lie on that last part. Somehow, it became chic to celebrate the town's failure. Ah well. The North won in the end.

Corydon's Harrison County Fair is the longest consecutive running fair in the state. This year's was the 147th annual event.

The one and only Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (aka James Best) from the Dukes of Hazzard TV series is from Corydon.

The late Gov. Frank O'Bannon was dyed-in-the-wool Corydon and is the namesake of the company I work for, O'Bannon Publishing.

Corydon's Conrad Music Company is one of the nation's oldest family-owned musical instrument stores.

Patrick Dempsey, star of movies such as Sweet Home Alabama and the TV show Grey's Anatomy, was born in Lewiston. An amateur racecar driver, in 2007 he plans on racing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Muhammad Ali's famous 'Liston Knockout' took place at the Colisee (then St. Dominic's Arena) in Lewiston on May 25, 1965. Photographer Neil Leifer made a trip back to the venue in May 2005 to commemorate his famous color photograph for a feature published in Sports Illustrated. Consequently, singer Robert Goulet was in Lewiston, singing at the Clay-Liston heavyweight bout, when he forgot the words to the national anthem.

Joey Gamache, world champion lightweight boxer lives and trained in Lewiston- Auburn (and oddly enough shares my birthday). Gamache is the only boxer from Maine to capture a world boxing title.

Al Couture and Ralph Walton fought in Maine's shortest prize fight in Lewiston, September 26, 1946, which lasted 10.5 seconds, including the referee's ten-second count.

Rick DiPietro, ice hockey goaltender for New York Islanders and Team USA in 2006 Olympics in Turin, was born in Lewiston.

Bill Carrigan of Lewiston(1883-1969), often refered to as the "Pride of Lewiston" was manager of the 1915 and 1916 world champion Boston Red Sox. Carrigan was Babe Ruth's first manager when Ruth arrived in the major leagues in 1914. Ruth later played for three managers who are in the Baseball Hall of Fame, but after he retired he said that Carrigan was the best manager he ever had.

Two time World Cup champ and three time Olympian Julie Parisien hails from Auburn.

Besides being the home of Jewel, Scotty Gomez, and Carlos Boozer we have some interesting laws.

In Fairbanks it is considered an offense to feed alcoholic beverages to a moose.

While it is legal to shoot bears, waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph is prohibited.

It is considered an offense to push a live moose out of a moving airplane. No law if the moose is dead.

It is the state policy that emergencies are held to a minimum and are rarely found to exist.-Sec. 44.62.270. State policy.

Moose may not be viewed from an airplane.

Pleasanton, Calif. is the wealthiest midsize city in the nation.

John Madden lives in town, and gives out the biggest candy bars on Halloween and also has the best decorations, IMO.

Safeway headquarters is located here.. I'm not sure if 7-11 headquarters still are.. but they at least used to be.

Scott Peters from the Carolina Panthers' mom teaches math at my old high school. Let's just say I'm really happy to have never had to take her class. I heard she was really tough.. among other things.

And the best fact, a sportsshooter founder (Brad Mangin) lives in P-town (yes, P-TOWN! Portland ain't got nothin on us).

Home to the oldest town in Nevada, Genoa, which only has about 200 permanant residents but the population grows to more that 40,000 for a weekend in September when they host the annual Candy Dance and craft fair that was started to raise money for street lights in the town in 1919.

The thermals draw soaring enthusiasts from all over the world. Many record-breaking glider flights have begun from the Minden-Tahoe Airport.

There are five golf courses in Douglas County which includes Carson Valley, part of Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake.
