Unusual image request - pricing help
Todd Bissonette, Photographer

->> I have had a request for an image to be used as a model for a memorial carving of an athlete who died in an accident last year. The organizer of the event where the accident occured is having this produced and is planning to give one to the team and also have one on display at the venue. I am told these will be the only two produced. I am waiting to here on the size and type of carving. The image in question was taken moments before the accident occured. I have checked fotoquote and other pricing resources but have not found a similar circumstance. I figured with the vast experience here on the board someone might be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

->> 1) Find out much they will pay to produce the two statues.
2) Ask for a percentage of that fee.
3) If the artist or company producing the carving will get credit (have their names somewhere on the carving) then you should too ("From a photograph by...")

->> Maybe I'll get slapped around for saying this, but I would not charge anything. If I understand you correctly, it doesn't sound like this is a for-profit venture - it's more charity. They are asking you to use a photo you took to make a statue. I'm assuming they are not charging the team for the statue?

Maybe more details would help. But if this is a HS athlete who died tragically and the statue is there to honor his memory, I would not charge.

The latest version of Fotoquote has information on this use. Look under the headings of:

Art referencing - Advertising
Art rendering - Advertising
Artist Rendering - Non-Commercial

While it may well be a noble gesture to donate one's talent and resource to a cause such as this, and I might be inclined to do so myself, the questions should still be asked:

Is the sculptor, or whoever is doing the casting, also donating their time, talent, and resources? Are they charging for materials only? Is the company that delivers the pieces to the venue donating their services? Is the company that makes the material that the statues will be made of donating their product? And so on...

Photographers are usually the first in line to be asked to "donate" their services and/or product.

Again, I might be inclined to a donation in a case like this. It sounds like a sad situation, and the memorial seems like a nice gesture. Still, these questions should be considered.

->> A large discount as opposed to a full donation. I would quote full price and the discount price as the airlines do. They airlines calls them bereavement fare, or compassionate fares.

I think that is how I would do this.
