->> I have done some searching on the boards, there has been some discussion on this topic but it is either dated or a little scattered. I just finished getting my photo archive in order. It is currently all on a redundant file server, but I am going to also be doing a DVD archive.
First I was wondering what the consensus was on DVD format DVD-R or DVD+R? I understand that DVD+R is a more recent technology and less compatible but what are the pluses of it over -R's?
Second, what is a good brand of DVDs that everyone would reccomend?
Thanks so much,
Ryan |

| ->> I've had problems with TDK DVD's. Never a problem with Imation/Sony/Memorex/Maxell. |

->> I'd add Verbatim to the list of (in my case) no-problem dvds.
You may want to look at the gold dvds, there are few brands out there. Just do a search. |

->> Unfortunately, the world of DVD media is rather confusing... SuperMediaStore has a FAQ that does a pretty good job of explaining some of it, and can be found at the following link:
http://www.supermediastore.com/dvdmediafaq.html
I cannot vouch for this company as far as buying media from them one way or another, as I've not purchased from them before... but the FAQ is fairly informative.

| ->> At one point I read a lot on this subject. The best non-printable were the eFilm Archival Gold DVD-R. The best printable were the Verbatim DataLifePlus or the Delkin inkjet archival gold DVD-R. |

| ->> I'll put in my vote for the Sony DVD's I really like them. No problems. I also use Delkin's eFilm Archival Gold DVD-R. I recently shot a wedding and archived the photos to the eFilm DVD. The bride and groom were a little disappointed that they could not see their photos on their DVD player. (They probably wanted to see them on their HD screen.) So for DVD players (which is not really a goal of most photographers) the DVD+R would have been better. I just wanted to use a 100-year disc that would be compatible with my Mac laptop, as DVD+R's are not compatible for mine. If the bride and groom wanted a slide show, I could have easily made one for them using DVD+R discs. Just my 2 cents. Best wishes, Rodrigo |

->> Been doing some research and both from what I have found and what some people have posted here it looks like I am going to go with Taiyo Yuden brand DVDs. And from the other things I have seen + or -R is not a huge concern for me since I will be reading them back on the machine they were burned or one of two other machines that shouldnt have any problems. That being said I have placed an order on newegg.com for a 50 pack of 16x -Rs for ~$20.
Thanks for the help.

->> "Taiyo Yuden"
Yep, or Sony. From what I've seen (on CD/DVD fansites) they produce among the most stable and reliable burns. Among cheaper media, Verbatim Datalife + is very good and is what I use for my lightscribe CD-R's and archival DVD's.
"anyone used a DVD with Lightscribe yet? I haven't seen any around, let alone used one."
They are out there, but they aren't cost effective (for me.) Most of the products I send out digitally requiring a professional look (which lightscribe is fantastic for) fit on a CD-R, and when I bought media a few weeks ago I couldn't justify the cost for lightscribe DVD's. |

->> All:
Let me also put in a good word for newegg.com for ordering DVDs and also for the comment boards that go with most of the products. I bought a 50 spindle of all white Verbatium printables there after some great testimony from several users who burn hundreds of disks a week. You can click on any product and many will have comments from people who have used them.
If you can't find it at a SS sponsor, newegg seems to be a good place to buy.

->> Newegg is a great place to shop, but be cautious of the ratings. They have been known to censor/delete negative reviews, giving the impression sometimes that products is all peachy-keen when it's not.
They actually had (have?) a disclaimer that the customer comments were for advertising purposes only and that they do delete negative reviews.
So, while I find the reviews useful, be wary of them. :) |
