NC photogs/natives...need info

->> looking for a little help from our southern friends:

I've heard from several trusted sources that North Carolina is THE place to live, but we've never been.....so next week I'm locking the wife-n-kids in the family roadster with a bucket of PB&J sandwiches (sliced diagonally, with crust) and heading down to confirm this rumor

I'm asking for suggestions on what I need to see, where to go and what to avoid.....essentially we trying to hit charlotte, winston-salem, the triangle and end at the shore/outer banks

looking for reasons to relocate, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

** crucial info: fun activities for kids under the age of 5 that have been in the car for 12 hours.

(I'll also listen to any thoughts about places that are on the road between NY and NC)

thank you,
adrian

->> Adrian-

I may be biased, but I think that you are missing some of the best of NC by only focusing on Winston and east. You should definitely check out western NC if you can squeeze it in.

Some of the pluses of the Asheville area....

Less urban sprawl than WS, Raleigh, Carlot
Close access to the mountains (and hiking, biking, paddling, climbing, fishing, and much more...)
Cooler summer temps (barely got into 80's today)
More winter sports due to higher elevations
Great cultural scene (music, arts, performances, etc...)
Centrally located (4-5 hour drive radius is impressive)

->> I too would second the notion to head west my friend.

Asheville would be a top five but also consider....

Boone, which would include the Banner Elk area.

The Hickory area.

Cary. Instead of Raleigh-Durham. Still have the Hurricanes close enough.

Greensboro. close enough to Winston Salem to visit.

Charlotte/Lake Norman area. Check out the Denver side of the lake and the Mountain Island area. Panthers, Bobcats, Checkers (minor league hockey), Knights (AAA baseball, soon to be uptown) and of course Nascar galore.

One of the main reasons we live where we do, is because of the central location to the beach and the mountains. We are 2 hours from our favorite campsite and 4 hours from the morning walks on the beach.
Higher property taxes, mediocre schools, and rising land costs in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) are forcing people towards Concord, south towards Rock Hill in SC or north up the lake (Denver, Catawba Co. areas).

Once you come down if you have any questions, email me or give me a shout.

->> You'll want Charlotte if PROFESIONAL sports is a "must have". Cary is the place for Northern . The "triangle" is really to big to think of as (1) entity, they have such different flavors. Ralaigh is a "tech" and college town but it runs well when school is out. Durham...ummmm...well I'd just suggest that you check the statistics...Chapel Hill is very much a college town.

Winston-Salem...nice lil city with an airport but limited flights (you'll get better fares in/out of Raleigh).

You're definitely going to have to narrow your search down...Charlotte to the coast is 5+ hours (depending on where you're going) so you're talking about HUGE differences in culture and personality.

What's important to you and your family?

->> Being born in Kinston, going to ECU, working in Hickory and having relatives all over the state I believe I have a good perspective.

First I think it maybe easier to find a variety of work near the areas of larger population, which are typically Asheville, the triangle area and the Wilmington area.

As far as the weather go west. I believe west of Statesville has the best weather.

Asheville is always ranked as one of the top places to live whenever there is a study. There are a number of colleges in the area which help with this.

However, there are more people with doctorates in the research triangle than any where else (at least at one time). The research triangle has a good industry base and thus better freelancing as compared to Asheville in my opinion.

Once you move away from the university towns the shift to country folk takes place pretty rapidly. Good folk and a little more conservative than a college town.

In the Cherokee area you can take the kids to the out door drama "Unto These Hills."
http://www.cherokee-nc.com/unto_these_main.php

In small town of Valdese, NC is the oldest outdoor drama "From This Day Forward."
http://www.oldcolonyplayers.com/

In eastern NC you can see "The Lost Colony."
http://www.outerbanks.com/lostcolony/lostcol2.shtml
Andy Griffin performed in this group and lives near by.

Grandfather Mountain in Linville has a habitat with Black Bears, Cougar, Bald Eagles and more, plus the mile-high bridge.
http://www.grandfather.com/

I grew up on going to these places and they are pretty fun for the family.

->> My family relocated to Salisbury ( think Kanapolis/concord ) about 13 years ago and it is now home to everyone in the family but me, I'm too urban minded. But i do love it there when I go. UNC has a huge campus in kanapolis and all of the things that go along with that. ie - people, food, stores, traffic, fun, etc. if you are even 20 miles out of the urban centers, you can expect the sidewalks to be rolled up by 8pm. and there are a few 'dry' counties in the mix, to be avoided at all cost in my opinion.

Asheville does rock and has flights to ATL everyday. I know of a few photogs who base there. Also it is not a huge drive to ATL to catch a flight.

You didn't mention if you need a job also or if you are going to freelance. that could be a huge influenece on where you go. the outerbanks is wonderful but i'm not sure Vibe is going to be calling you to shoot the local rapper in Ocracoke. but southern living might need a chef shot. if your trying to freelance for newspapers i'll bet your going to run into a whole lot of $25 gigs. but there is probably more oppurtunity in the big cities, Charlotte and Raliegh, maybe? a staff gig is probably best. unless you got national clients already who don't care where you are or you will be doing yout sports.

IMHO

But if you are looking for a quiet place to hang out and relax, I would agree with previous posts and say that the Asheville/Western NC area is a great place. Don't rule out areas in the upstate of South Carolina. Greenville is nice and the cost of living is less in the upsate of SC. Gas is only 2.71 here compared to the national average of 3.03. Asheville is only a little over a hour from Greenville and Charlotte is almost 2 hours.

->> Having grown up in Denver (Lake Norman) I can say I was in a very central spot for mountains and ocean when the whim hit, but to be honest, I couldn't wait to get out of there. I grew up in a N.C. that was still trying to find itself and very much racist (and yankee hating to boot!!!) so I was happy to leave.

It has changed quite a bit since then. Now, more outsiders have moved in and it is much more integrated. The Civil War is pretty much over now, with the occasional local who might joke about your roots. But for me, I went back to Denver not to long ago and the woody, lake-to-myself nirvanna is gone now. I used to jump out of bed, roll off the pier and I was in the water, now it seems over boated and overburdened. But I would still take it over the Raleigh zone. I liked the hills compared to the flat, dead air of the coastal zone. The Triangle is good to go to from time to time, but I could never live there, the Piedmont area is the perfect balance point (Charlotte/Huntersville/Concord/Hickory/Lake Norman)

The mountains are perfect. Blowing Rock, Boone and Asheville are terrific. Go to Chimney Rock and climb opposite the highway from the rock, you will stumble into the indian village at the end of Last of the Mohicans! Awesome. Go to Lake Lure, (watch Dirty Dancing for a refresher or, again, Last of the Mohicans) and for a great waterfall experience, go to Linville Falls.

Wilmington is one of the coolest towns around. Old Colonial style with surf! And farther north, Nags Head is supreme. If you are taking the kids, they will love Kill Devil Hills where the Wright Brothers Flew and you can watch the hang gliders take off. And explore where Black Beard hid out from the English. Get a beer at Sam & Omies if it still exists.

Gosh, I guess I still do miss N.C.

One last thing. Barbeque. Eat it. Eats lots of it. Only get the cider vinegar style with coleslaw slathered on top. Or you have no business going there!!!! And if you are lucky enough to get invited to a pig pickin, do it. Think of it as a N.C. luau!!! And for fast food, Bojangles......mmmmmmmmm

There are plenty of photographic opportunties ranging from NASCAR, hockey, ACC basketball, football & lots of minor league baseball. If you need more in depth information, send me an email and I will be glad to share my thoughts on different locations.

->> Born in Shelby, schooled in Raleigh, lived in Cary, Apex, & Raleigh.

Western NC is great for the weather, the people are super friendly, and the barbecue... well, it's western style.

Eastern NC is warmer weather, closer to the beach, the people are probably a little more likely to be edgy, and the barbecue... well, it's eastern style.

If you like BBQ, go to Lexington where they have Lexington Style BBQ... snoody bums, got their own style!

I'm partial to the Raleigh area just for the cultural aspect. The mentality leans a little more left, a little more art-centric, and generally speaking I think there's more to do in the area. When you put Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill within 25 miles of each other, you wind up with two great cities (even though you can get a heckuva house in Durham for nothing, AVOID... AVOID... AVOID...). You won't find better college bball within the drive (Wake Forst, Duke, Chapel Hill, NC State are all w/in 1.5 hours of each other), you're a day trip to the beach, a weekend trip to the mountains, easy driving distance to great skiing in VA & WVA, and to top that all off the housing market in the Raleigh area hasn't gotten the memo that the market is on decline.

If you do choose the Triangle area, I highly recommend Apex, THE peak of good living! It's within a 25 minute drive to Raleigh / Cary, is growing like nobody's business, isn't snooty like Cary (yuck, ptooey), doesn't have the freaky vibe you'll get in Clayton / Garner, and lacks the traffic issues you'll find in Holly Springs.

If you're interested, have your people call my people and I'll get you the information of the absolute most honest / down to earth / tell it like it is real estate agent in the land.

http://www.ibiblio.org/ch-scene/bbq/lexington.html

Mitchell's in Wilson is also worth mentioning. as are 100's of other joints.

lexington has over 75 BBQ joints in a town of 20k or so.

or something like that.

Do NOT miss taking the family to the Nantahala Outdoor Center(noc.com), North of Franklin NC. Awesome white water rafting, that you can take the kids on, and super Mtn biking in the Tsali Rec Area.

I was ten days away from moving back when I came out of college the next summer, then I was offered an internship at a metro daily. Adrian, you know, the rest is history. It was tough living in a Dry town as a young, hungry, 23 year old.

But the Mountains of Western North Carolina shouldn't be missed on your vacation. Also go to the Jarrett House about a half hour east of Franklin, awesome 'family style' servings of southern food.

Mountains and beaches, pro sports...its all here. My wife grew up in Syracuse and says that the Mountains remind her of home (just not quite as cold or with as much snow). I can recommend the beaches for the kids. (What kid doesn't like water?) Wrightsville beach near Wilmington is very nice. As for kids, if you can make it up to the Mountains, Tweetsy Railroad in Boone is kid-friendly. Charlotte has Carowinds Amusment park with a HUGE kids area, but that depends on how much under 5 the kids are and how much money you want to spend. Similarly, Emerald Point in Greensboro is a nice waterpark. Much of NC is photogenic. If you can't make it to the mountains on this trip, "leaf season" is nice.

Bill's in Wilson. B's BBQ in Greenville (that's NC not SC).

Eastern NC is much better than that Ketchup based stuff sold in Lexington.

If you are in the Triad and want Eastern NC BBQ, go to Prissy Polly's in Kernersville. Business 85 at the Hwy 66 exit. They actually serve both.

If you are going thru Burlington, go to Zack's for one of their Hot Dogs. Order a "combo-block-onion-heavy chili". That is a hot dog with block cheese, onions and chili. Really good, expect to wait if you go during lunch rush.

The triad is home to the furniture market. There is more photography studio square footage space in the triad per capita than in any other area of the country.

Will be in the triad over the next few days. Can't wait to get some good BBQ.

->> Every story needs the counterpoint

A few things I've noticed during my stay in NC.

Cons.

It does snow/ice every once in a while. When it does, you find out that southerners don't know how to drive in those conditions and show it. The northerners are no better b/c once they move here they forget how to drive in the snow.

Its hot and and humid during the summer.

You will meet people who think the civil war has yet to be decided. And get to see plenty of confederate flags.

If your a democrat you vote will be thrown away every four years when you vote for president.

The roads are not well kept and the taxes are high. But, you car tax is normally cheap (go figure). Public transportation is virtually nill.

Pros

I'm from California, and while the mexican food here hasn't reached that level its very good; much better then anything up north that I've found.

The art scene is starting to blossum.

Some good mountain biking spots.

The ocean is warm.

Its cheap.

Only 4+ hours to DC (the closest real city.)

Finally

The skiing is not great. Up around Rochester is better. But personally I've only skied here and near Buffalo once and that was enough for me.

given the time we can spend there, we wanted to see as much as possible and obvoiusly won't get it all.....but you have tweaked my interest in checking out Asheville and the west

as far as our needs....more than likely, the move would hinge on a staff position, so we chose the “larger” areas just to get a frame of reference....we could always explore the rest if/when we arrived.

of course if we absolutely loved it, I’d consider trying the freelance gig from there....I would imagine that local opportunities might be greater in NC than they might be in western NY........but much more travel would be involved, so our options for a home-base would be greater

I’ve heard northern SC (Rock Hill) is filling with residents that work in Charlotte and some friends in Cary repeated much of what was said here

so much to learn....so much bbq to sample

thanks again for the wisdom,

I think that Pinveille, which is a few miles south of Charlotte is a great area as well, it has a lot to offer. The Charlotte metro area is also a great place to live and has a lot to offer as well.

I also went to school up near Asheville and that's a great area also. It offers a lot of outdoor activities, like the Blue Ridge Parkway and sections of the Appalachian Trail. It offers other great local attractions such as the Biltmore House and Grove Park Inn. Asheville also has some of the "interesting" people you'll ever meet.

If you're looking to relocate, and you're looking to live in the Charlotte area, also trying look just south of the border in South Carolina. The taxes are a lot less, and you can get really great deals on homes there. Just a suggestion, but there are a lot of people who live in the area and commute to Charlotte.

->> Hey Jason and Joshua,
Mind Fedexing a vinegar bbq out my way? haha The owner of Boss Hogg was my High School vice prinicipal. Talk about hard line. Think of the walking dude in Cool Hand Luke. He had a leather paddle that struck fear into people!!! Called him "Mistah Bawsss suh!" That is how he was referred to....and how you answered him!!!! When He opened the place, he was cool as a kitty cat. Talk about strange.

Now Jason, You want good Mexican? I forgot the Spanish translation, but Taco King in Mt Airy is better than anything I have had in NM, here in AZ, CA AND mexico!!! Yes! It's TRUE!!!!!

It was a Mexican family that cooked and sold food for locals in Elkin for months in a burned out auto shop until the health inspector shut them down. But, he took to them so much he helped them open a legitimate restaurant in Mt Airy. If they are still there, then get some! The goat taco is the best, although, the beef tongue taco is to die for. THey have the real, regional ethnic stuff there. They were my first real documentary story I ever did for a paper. Seek them out!

->> My wife and I just got back from our first trip to Asheville last weekend. And it was our first trip away from the ankle-biter (Asheville is only two hours from us so it wasn't TOO bad on the Wife).

Cool little city. Great eats and some nice folks.

We stayed in a B&B near downtown and did the obligatory day at Biltmore. Nothing makes you feel poor like walking around a castle filled with antiques worth more than your house. That plus admission+snacks+souvenirs= Now I know why the Vanderbilts were so rich.

I can now say that I've visited all the major areas of NC (oddly enough, I don't know why the area closest to me took me the longest to get to). Great state.
