High School Football Poster Ideas
Kent Opdahl, Photographer
Urbandale | IA | USA | Posted: 6:30 PM on 08.09.06
->> I am getting ready to do the schedule poster for local high school’s football team. The players and I are having trouble coming up with an idea or slogan for the poster. And thought I could get some help from everybody. The poster contains a shot of the senior players with a saying along with the upcoming schedule. In the past we have used slogans like

“Not in our yard”
“Rolling over the competition”
“We will protect this House”
“Turning the tables”
“We own these streets”

I have suggested
“The weekend starts here” But got turned down by the AD to Beer commercial like he says
Thought of a 007 theme since it’s the class of 2007 but the players thought it was dorky.

Can anybody give me some ideas? Please and Thanks

1. Circling Above The Rest

2. Undeniably Tough

3. Body and Soul - This is the way we roll

4. Operation: Winning

5. Winning - What We Do Best

->> ok, so i'm a dork, but the 007 idea sounds pretty good:

props could be had on the cheap -- some bow ties, a martini glass or three, etc., (no need for complete tuxedos), and some ruff and gruff, mud and grass stained players (in or out of uniform, but with the bow ties regardless), maybe a couple of hottie cheerleaders in whatever passes for high school haute couture. maybe a few tough guy cigars, but smoking is, of course, taboo. no guns, of course. unless you can get away with it.

low-key lighting would be cool, but pretty involved (out of my league, for that many players anyway). setting...hmm. that would also be a trick. maybe one of them has some kind of sweet car they could be positioned around? or several sweet cars? every high school kid i know has a sweeter car than mine, but that's a low-set bar to begin with.

don't know man, but i'm down with the 007 idea. once the players begin to realize that they'll look hot, not dorky, they ought to fall in line. if you can articulate the idea well enough in your mind, stick to your guns and shoot!

->> I'd be cautious of the martini glasses as these are HS kids you're talking about. Wouldn't want to suggest underage drinking now would you? Some parents could be offended by this.

Same thing with "hottie cheerleaders." Remember that these are kids...not adults.

You always have to consider the appropriateness of the session in regards to the subject age.

->> Kent,

Are there any zoo's in your area? Maybe you could talk to the zoo keeper and have the kids pose with a live hawk or two.

Maybe 2-3 captains in the center of the image- each holding a hawk on their arm. Remaining seniors grouped around the captains?

->> Yes i would agree on no martini glasses or hotties. Everything has to be approved by the AD and the coach. the zoo idea might work as i know the CEO of the local zoo.

->> What you could do is something that would play off a graphical theme. Grunge is all the range right now.

I'll email you a some photos we've done for our teams. Email me at work whitley@nwmissouri.edu and I'll send you some posters I did for softball player awards that would give you a good idea of what you might be able to do.

Okay, so where to get some grunge... There's some software called Machine Wash filters that you can use to distrest clip art and photos. A coworker has scanned paper from her print making class. And that's some good stuff. Also, sometimes you can buy grungy photos from stock photo agencies.

->> Wait a sec -- this is the same sort of high school that has things like 'dance squads' and 'proms', right? Ever witnessed that stuff? But 'hotties' are out? Is this a matter of my word choice, or is high school dress and behavior just so much different/conservative where you're at? Dang -- and i'm in Kansas! More power to your high school if the half-time shows aren't a showcase of half-naked adolescent awkwardness gone wild.

And 'grunge is all the rage right now'? I feel like i'm taking crazy pills...

Anyhoo, have a ball doing it, whatever you do.

UFC... sounds too basic but perhaps (digital manipulation) packaging will help it.

->> Well, I just got the finished poster/calendar from our football booster club. We went with a military theme, and the ROTC teacher was able to get us on the March Air Reserve Base in Moreno Valley. We were escorted out to the flightline (or whatever it's called) and given full access to a brand new C-17 so I could shoot the program cover and the team poster/calendar which is handed out all around town. That plane was amazing, the boys looked great, and we all had an awesome time! Anyway, here's some of the images http://www.sportsshooter.com/jodygomez/poster/index.html

I have to share that the lighting was a huge challenge. We were there around 4pm, it was around 95 degrees, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and the glare was blinding. But I'm really happy with the way the images turned out on the poster. I can't wait to see the program!

:~)
