Nope. I proved my point, not yours.
"You can keep your traveling."
How narrow minded of you.
"thanks for being professional"
As always.
Oh, and Vive Les Bleus! |

Hopefully someone got the shot of France head butting the guy in the chest towards the end. OUCH!!! |

->> Jim,
Your recent posts have been blatantly disrespectful towards Gerry, and it is completely uncalled for. Gerry posed a legitimate question and in response you belittled him. Rainier was able to answer the question without calling Gerry 'naive' and 'narrow minded'. Why couldn't you?
Your recent posts show that you have been anything but professional. |

crazy... the italians win the world cup with an average team, but incredible team spirt and hard work, they finally win a penalty shootout......but most of them will be looking for a new club team to play for tomorrow when 4 big serie A teams get relegated for match fixing....
only in italy...
many congrats to the italians out there....viva football |

->> Am I the only one that noticed that right before the head butt, Materazzi gave Zidane what looked like a pinch/twist of the nipple (or is it Naples?) in the replay?
I have a hard time believing it was verbal provocation alone that made Zidane blow up.
Regardless, the way Zizou chose to retaliate was so outlandish and bizarre, I couldn't help but laugh.

He didn't pose a "legitimate question" at all.
If you'd been paying attention you would have seen that "Gerry" made some sort of bizarre attack on what was my simple informational piece about the French respect for a press pass.
He also purposely misconstrued my statements to imply that I supported his mistaken claims. I called him on it.
Gerry has to earn the respect of others. It isn't handed to him on a silver platter.
Tough. |

All he has to do is say that Materazzi said "F**k France!" and he'll still be a hero.
To the French anyway. |

->> Andrew:
I really appreciate it, bud -- I do; but really, let's just all drop this whole thing.
I could have posed my question in a better way. I was genuinely curious if this was standard practice, as implied. It would have been better of me to simply ask, "Hey -- is this really how it works in France?" My apologies. Sincerely.
Look, I sound like a broken record -- I know -- but there's a ton of not great (to just plain bad) advice that's thrown around here lately, often by the same people. I made the mistake of reading that into this thread, perhaps. In my defense, it was the "wink-wink, nod-nod" undertone of a couple of posts in the original thread that caught my attention. Forgive me for reading too much into that.
Sorry for taking away from the original point of the thread, and for making broad generalizations about topics beyond my not-well-traveled reach. I still stand behind a lot of what I said, but I recognize that my delivery ought to have been better.
Jim:
"Gerry has to earn the respect of others. It isn't handed to him on a silver platter."
I agree. I'll be sure to keep working on it. You do the same.
Bye all,

->> Great game, I am curious what was said between the two that made a head-butt the preferred method of retaliation but regardless this is one for the books. The shot of Zidane walking away from the stage with the cup on the table was a great shot during U2s little song and dance dealie.
What fun that was!

->> hooray....zidane won the 'golden ball' for the best player of the tournemant....hahahahahahaha.....voted for by journaists.....what a hilarious conclusion.
incase you didn't get it on US coverage, they reckon alot of the winding up and abuse zidane was getting (from buffon and others just before matterazzi went over the top) is about zidane's algerian family roots...
oh well, he's still the best player of his generation. |

| ->> What kills me is that the media kept saying that Zidane, with what he just did, will never be in the same tier of players of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer (sp). I can understand the others but Maradona... you've got to be kidding me. Hand of God, drugs, more drugs, banned for life and he is a top tier player. If Zizou head butts one guy and he is kept out of this greatest players list then... well I don't know what. |

->> Voting for best player probably ended way before Zidane's head butt. I agree there was A LOT of provocations, but it's normal thing in sport. Opponent players do this so they would provoke exactly this what happend with Zidane... Opponent loses his nerves and on the end he's kicked out of game. And of all players Zidane is old enough to know this and get over such dirty games. But on the other hand... it's really easy to be smart now, while during game it's completely different thing, so I don't really blame him, but I don't apploud him either.
As far as top tier players go... I don't know football (sorry soccer for you US guys :P ) enough to judge. I like his style and I like what he's doing with ball. I have no idea if he's better, worse or in same class as Pele, Beckenbauer etc. This head butt or no head butt. One stupid thing like this can't really destroy whole his career. |

->> Indeed, the vote for Zidane's rightful place as the tournament's best player was made at half time in the final...roughly an hour before he lost the plot and headbutted Materazzi. The man's a legend and I for one will remember him for all the right reasons...it's a shame however that some of the youngsters out there for whom this is only their first or second World Cup memory, will have their own recollections.
I'll second your point Joe...what Hansen was saying last night really got on my nerves. For a player of his own mediocre calibre to say that Zidane will forever sit at "the top of the second tier" below Pele, Maradona etc. is ludicrous - every time he plays it looks like The Matrix, everything slowing down around him - anyone that can do that on the biggest stage in football has to be classed amongst the greats.
Fair play to Italy though...with their penalty record, they must have been s******g it during ET, and put away 5 quality penalties to win...now England have NO excuse in the future! |

->> Simon,
Hansen was talking a load of rubbish last night. I watched highlights on ESPN this morning and the American pundits made my head hurt. Comparing Zidane to Pele or Maradona is like when Americans compare Jordan to past greats... its not fair, different generations. I will always remeber Zidane for his magical moments during Champions League play and how he made Brazil look ordinary, not once but twice.

->> So, Zidane has finally spoken. He apologized but can't regret it too much because apparently the Italian had repeatedly insulted his mother and sister. He does regret leaving his teammates with 10 minutes to go in ET.
He would like to have the FIFA investigate what the Italian said, using a lip-reader to prove what he's saying and that it's not just an excuse.
He might also lose his Golden Ball award.
Incidentally, there is a very clear rule (#55) in the FIFA rule book that any player or coach saying racist remarks will automatically disqualify his team from the tournament. So, potentially (really not likely) if lip-readers agree that the Italian insulted Zidane and his family in a racist manner, Italy could be DQed from the Cup. Not likely though. But food for thought, I guess. |
