Transmiting via a Razor

->> I am trying to transmit from my Powerbook via a Razor phone by bluetooth. I have the data service from Cingular and all the passwords and phone numbers that they gave me. The powerbook and the phone are talking to each other but will not connect. Can anyone help?

->> Do you have to use the bluetooth with a Razr or can you just use the cable supplied with the phone? How is the connection speed for those of you using Verizon?

->> if you have a RAZR from ***verizon*** there's a few tricks you have to do to get the thing to work... firstly, verizon has disabled the EVDO network in what's called "tethered" mode on the RAZR and other EVDO phones (this includes bluetooth), so you have to use the phone on their slower voice and data network (1xRTT)... this link on howardforums describes how to make it happen: (WARNING: you will be entering test mode and can really screw up your phone in this mode, so if you don't feel comfortable doing it... don't)

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=6355761#post6355761

...and on a mac you'll then need to disable CHAP authentication and force your mac to use PAP authentication (more fun acronyms you don't need to remember)...

Anthony: speed is faster than with the v710 -- takes about a minute or so to upload a nice 1 mb file and yes you can use a 5-pin mini USB cable in place of bluetooth. but it's not going to be as fast as an EVDO card (too bad they don't fit in the new macs, huh?)

the procedure differs for other carriers, especially the GSM carriers. if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me through my member page.

->> If close enough to home or a wireless hot-spot I find a Razor very useful for navigating through traffic and along the sidewalk, be careful though, if the front wheel catches you go end over end and camera gear goes bye bye.

->> Yes Marvin, After my post I did some research and I'm not sure that this set up is going to be fast enough to move these big files. I am thinking that I need to go with an EDGE phone instead of the Razor.

->> Bill,
I have the edge phone ,I love it . though I am not using cingular's program, I am using the sony program. The sony program was reccomeneded by the Cingular tech support. You will have to uninstall any cell programs you have on before that. I would check with Cingular to see if they have the new type of card that is suppose to be out in all parts of the US by the end of the year. The only downside to cell is that if you are in a high use area the speeds get VERY slow, most of the time you cannot even send at all. The areas I am refering to are nascar race areas and probably Large football crowd areas. If you would like some more help please do not hesitate to contact me.

Marvin

->> Wow, after weeks of messing around with it, I finally got the Razr to connect to the internet via Bluetooth. However, after 10-12 seconds of connecting, it disconnects and a window pops up and says that the server has unexpectedly hung up. Any suggestions as to what this is and how it can be fixed?

->> I would use the cable connected to the phone... speed will be more consistant and you will lose the overhead of bluetooth connectivity.

If mobile transmission is a priority then I would highly recommend a dedicated data card such as Sprint or Verizon Air Cards. I have been using the Sprint for about 7 months with excellent results.
