20 inch Imac Intel

->> Ok, its been like 4 months since this has been out.
I am thinking of getting this to hold me over for about a year or so till the powermacs become Intel and photoshop becomes Universal ( adobe was at my newspaper the other day and said it would not be out till 2007).
MY QUESTION. Who has real experiance using this for edting and photoshop work. How slow is photoshop running on this machine through rosetta? What is it equal to? If it is equal to my 15 inch 1gig processor power book g4 I will be happy. CAN ANYONE WHO IS USING THIS AS THIER MAIN DESKTOP PLEASE ADVISE.
THANKS

Seriously, it's got to be at least three, maybe four times faster than my 1gig G4 PowerBook, even with programs running under Rosetta.

Adobe Lightroom (which is Universal) runs extremely fast as does just about any Universal program I've run across so far.

I'm sure something faster and better will come out tomorrow or the next day, but I had to make a replacement and couldn't wait around for that. I don't regret the decision one bit. The screen is amazing as well. I didn't expect too much from an all-in-one computer, but I don't think I've used a better monitor.

->> If you were worried about speed you could run bootcamp and run a Windows copy of Photoshop in XP. According to the benchmarks I've read, a Macbook Pro running Windows is faster with Photoshop than any other dual core PC laptop out there. You could get the most out of your Imac until the UB version is released later this year or early next.

I was going to get one to do this with a Macbook, but decided to wait for the 64bit Merom processors to come out later this year.

Just a thought, anyone have an opinion on this.

I'll just note that Bootcamp is BETA software and there have been several reports of people being able to boot into windows, but being unable to re-enter OS X. Apple does not provide support for this program so use bootcamp at your own risk and backup everything.

Then you'd only have to worry about viruses.

->> Sorry I can't answer your specific question at the moment, but I should be able to do so in the very near future. At home, I use a 1.9GHZ 17" G5 iMac with 1.5GB of RAM (which, BTW, I've carried on a plane to a couple of jobs), and it absolutely screams compared to my old G4/867 PowerBook. (Read of its fate in another thread.) At my day job (where I do lots of support, but where my department's name contains the word "research"), I have a 20" iMac and have just been handed the job of assessing the speed of CS2 on it.

Whatever the result of that test, however, I think it's a safe bet that the speed will be significantly slower than the G5 iMac, and my recommendation to you (if you really only want this to "hold you over for a year or so") is to get a refurbished G5 iMac from Apple (or elsewhere) while they're available. Prices are outstanding, and the speed of non-Universal apps will be unbeatable compared to any Mactel.

I'll refrain from saying anything about running windoze on a Mac because my momma told me "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

->> Jim, this is my opinion, I know we've had this clash before but really if you run a copy of the free Avast anti-virus and free Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, you will have few if any problems. I've been running this exact setup since I was a Junior in High School and low and behold five years later I'm virus free. Yes, it is possible to get a virus but with only these two programs and some auto updates by Microsoft I haven't had any problems in half a decade, which is a long time in the computer world.

I love working on our dual 2.7 and 20" ACD but really for the thousands we spent on our business hardware OS X is better in only a few ways, that can't be overcome by a few extra free programs in XP.

->> If you want/need to run Windows on an iMac, I recommend you a virtualization solution like Parallels:

http://www.parallels.com/en/download/mac/

You can run windows full speed inside a OSX window, this technology will be included in the next release of OSX next year.
