Big thanks to all involved with SSA II

->> Just want to once again extend a big thanks to all the "big wigs" involved ... it was truly a great experience. It is amazing how much can be absorbed in several days and I am eager to see how I grow as a photographer as a result of the experience.
I also want to say thanks to my fellow participants....great group of people! Of everything I learned at SSA I think maybe the greatest lesson I learned was that there are truly a thousand ways to skin a cat, of which I think I know maybe five. Needless to say, I was really inspired by how differently each person approached the events we shot. I hope to broaden my vision we the lessons I learned from you.

It was an amazing experience and I want to thank everyone involved: My fellow SSA classmates, Bert, all the faculty, and especially Ron for making it all possible. Thank you everyone! Can't wait till next year!

in some cases, some of the students had never shot a particular sport, yet came back with images that will no doubt be part of their portfolio.

to the SSA class of 2006 - this is only the beginning.

to all the other professionals out there - look out, the class of 2006 is on the loose.

I've set up an FTP server for people to upload full-resolution fun pics. I'll send the details out on the mailing list. There are about 10 of you who haven't joined it yet; e-mail me if you want to join the list.

Thanks to Bert, Ronal, Wally, Mike, Lucas, Myung, Matt, and everyone at Nikon for dedicating their time and energy to make
this workshop a wonderful experience.

The steeplechase video is classic. Check it out on Bert's page.

So I loved meeting everyone and really learned a lot from not only the instructors but also fellow participants and really appreciated everyone's awesome shots throughout the week.

Thanks to Matt for the walk of my life up to the top of the Pyramid to shoot the volleyball. Thanks to Michael for all the help with my editing. Thanks to Ronal and Armando for helping with the remote cords, especially Armando's patience. Thanks to Myung for the impromptu lighting lesson. Thanks to Lucas for being so patient and explaining the fine points of horseracing and for generally keeping me in line. Thanks to Wally for putting up with me and for all the editing help and encouragement. Last but not least thanks to Bert for all of the hard work that went into pulling the whole event off. I loved your portrait class and can't wait to try out some of the lighting tips.

I think I have brought home a wealth of new information and ways to approach things. I can't wait to see how I continually develop and how I incorporate all of these pearls of wisdom into my work.

I will try to update my page later today with some of my shots.

And thanks most of all to my fellow participants. Despite going from 6am till 2am some days, I loved every minute of it because of the awesome attitude and work ethic every one of you brought. I can't wait to keep track of all of your work and careers.

I know I picked the right industry to work in because of the great people like them who were willing to take the time to help other shooters grow.
To my fellow students, what can I say...I was absolutely blown away by the talent we had in that room. Everyone's shots were incredible. You all really pushed me to see more creatively when I'm on photo shoots from now on.
Aside from the professional aspect, you all were hella fun to hang out with. I'll never forget our Outback Steakhouse portrait session, the "pole-cam" at track & field, the poor sucker who ate it face first at steeplechase, and of course the digital pinhole.
Every part of the weekend was a blast and I'm sure I'll notice the quality of my work go up.
Keep on the lookout for the fun pix within the next few days when I have the time. Still trying to recover from that marathon of a week we just had.
Thanks again, all!

when did this outback steakhouse dinner take place and where was I? I don't think that I ever had a real meal during those 5 days. McDonalds squeezed between my 13 hour adventure at the horse races and editing was the best meal I had.
Seriously it was great and thanks again to everyone!
I meant to say jordan was the *unsung* hero (not unsong). He was like our own little genie that just appeared whenever he was needed.
I look forward to seeing fun pix! I will work on uploading some today. I have a shot of Carlos on the roof of the equipment house at the tennis courts. Everyone thought about climbing up there, but he was the only who did! Carlos I know you will go places, especially high ones.

->> So - I just woke up from a *fifteen hour* comatose. I can't remember ever sleeping for 15 HOURS; I guess I didn't realize how tired I really was when I left Sunday!

What can I say? SSA was easily one of the best workshops (photo or otherwise) that I've ever attended. I would've been content with just the classes - but add to it a multitude of hands-on shoots and even pro-level shoots??! And then - top it off with knowledgeable instructors and staff willing to answer the most mundane questions or help engineer the wackiest remotes (pole cam, drum cam). AND STILL ADD - a group of students who all bent over backwards to help each other out and were willing to share their knowledge and experience... I could go on and on. My poor friends are going to get tired of hearing about SSA!

Bert, Ron, Matt, Wally, Lucas, Mike, Jordan, Armando, Myung, and Andy - you guys are the best. We are so very fortunate to have an opportunity like this. The sheer volume of information I digested this week is immeasurable and will have a dramatic effect on what I shoot and how I shoot it. I've never been to a workshop where *all* of the instructors pulled marathon days just as long (or longer) than the students. Thank you all for your tireless efforts and know that you have made a difference in many lives and careers. And Darrell - thanks for the cameo appearances.

Melissa, Matt, and Rob - you guys were the best roommates; thanks for putting up with my late nights and early mornings! Carey - thanks for the conversation; I feel much better about my decision, should I need to make it. Debra - FedEx just came by with a package for a "Mr. Speedy Horse". Tyler, Johnny, Gabe, Louie, and everyone else - it was a pleasure meeting you and working with you all. Please do stay in touch. Oh, and RJ - I finally got some pizza!

Lastly - thanks to Deanna and Emma Hanashiro for your efforts and continual support of all SportsShooter events.

Check out Stan's FTP server for funpix, and please upload yours when you have time. I'm off to update my page and set aside images for next month's clip contest (enter May 1-15). Let's try for an SSA clip-contest sweep!

Take care,
Crystal

When I started Sports Shooter and later the various workshops, it was because I had nothing like them when I was in college and starting out in this business. I began Sports Shooter "to give a little something back" ... but in reality I have been getting much more in return.

Meeting and working with all of the SSA II participants was a wonderful experience. The growth that I witnessed in all of the participants was amazing. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and try new techniques was a tribute to your desire to improve and become the best that you can.

The photographs all the participants made during The Academy are lasting examples to all of that.

Melissa, Friday night after track & field, Jesse, Tony, Ashley, and I craved beer and steak. So, a few drinks later you had four photographers create an impromptu portrait session with a point n shoot. The later into the evening it got, the more creative we were, naturally. Shots and some quotes (you got to send me those, Jesse) will be up on the fun pix page soon. Good times...

The thing I really enjoyed most about this workshop was the way everybody went out of their way to help each other out, whether it was an instructor, or a fellow SSA II classmate. We were very fortunate to have the cooperation and access to Big West Conference events during our four days of shooting. Matt Brown was responsible for getting the BWC's involvement and thanks goes to the players, coaches and staffs at U.C. Irvine, CSU, Long Beach and CSU, Fullerton.

The addition of several professional events was a big bonus for The Academy. Wally Skalij of the LA Times was the person responsible for getting us access to horse racing at Santa Anita Park.

Big Sports Shooter thanks goes out to these people who really help make the Sports Shooter Academy the best educational event that I have ever been involved with:
Mike Willman, Santa Anita Park
Jeff Moeller, LA Kings
Rob Raichlen, LA Clippers
Kimberly Moran, Brener Zwikel & Associates, Inc. (AVP)
Patrick Donnelly, LA Galaxy
Alison Groendal, Home Depot Center

Louis Feldman and Samy's Camera were also a big help in holding The Academy. They have always been there when I needed help, so a big thanks to Louis and Samy's Camera.

I hope we can do this again sometime soon ...

MAHALO!

->> Bert I know you just got done with all of this, and I'm sure it was alot of work but I have to let you know, if you don't have this event next year I'll be devastated. I'm already depressed I didn't get to meet Stanley, Hu's thousands of new posts I had read when I was still in school.

->> Hey everyone, I'm now a member of the SportsShooter community!

Just like all of you, I learned a great deal and absorbed as much as my sleep-deprived brain can take it.

The biggest of thanks to Bert, Matt, Mike, Wally, Ron, Lucas, Myung, Armando, Jordan, Big Andy B., and everyone else who made this thing possible.

Thanks for letting me use all the expensive equipment that makes me frown on my own stuff now that I'm back to everyday life, and thanks for letting me pick your brains most of all.

->> The first of several educational videos from Sports Shooter Academy II has hit the website!

Thanks to the LA Times' Myung J. Chun for all of the time and energy he put into shooting and editing this video ...and the other videos upcoming.

And special thanks to Andy Bernstein for being a part of this workshop and for allowing us to give everyone a glimpse into his photography and his life.

Make sure you check out part 8 ... it is something that many of us forget and many of us learn late.
