Ugh - 1DMkII shutter failure
David Harpe, Photographer

->> Had my 1DMkII blow a shutter today. No clue why - I was doing light studio work. Cancount says about 17,000 actuations. Of course it's out of warranty.

Anyone have any idea how much a shutter replacement costs these days?

->> Update for the archives...

Received my camera back today. Total cost was $293.64. Total turnaround time was one week from the day I shipped it.

Service summary:
"Replace shutter unit, accesory shoe & other. Update firmware. Check all to factory spec."

Works great! And now I have a nice bright shiny black hotshoe to scuff up all over again. Not sure what they mean about the firmware update - I was already at 1.2.4.

Kudos to Canon CPS service! Couldn't ask for better...

->> At my previous job, the work-issued Mark II I used blew its shutter about a month ago. One of the blades was sticking at faster shutter speeds (320th and up) causing a annoying overexposed line shaped like a shutter-blade on images.

->> My shutter grenaded. Un-fortunatly one of the shutter curtains
scratched the sensor. It only cost $700 to fix it.
Canon thru in a new shutter box. They said I was near 100k
actuations. ( doesnt it go to about 200k?) Oh well.

->> Eileen, my 1DMK2 shutter died last year at Road Atlanta over Labour Day weekend.

Sent the camera into Canon overnight on the Tuesday, had it back by Monday all fixed and replaced just in time for me to head off to Phillip Island. Canon (Chris@Canon) have been so helpful and their service response times and turnarounds have always been top notch.

->> Sunday brought my first shutter failure. My 1D MKII started displaying a white streak in the center of every image with any part of the subject falling in that region showing up distorted.

I did exactly what Canon would want me to do... ran out and bought a new camera :-) So hopefully CPS can repair my MKII under warranty (its only 10 months old) and I can enjoy my new 5D which, while much slower, made some nice images Monday.

I still have my 20D backup thankfully...

->> I too blew a Mark II shutter blade a couple of weeks ago as well, same symptoms as Eric. About $369 to fix through Jamesburg. (They did a great job, thanks gang!)

When I checked my actuations I can honestly say that sucker was on borrowed time. :-)

Perhaps I'll hold a "Guess The Actuations" 50/50 raffle (to help pay for the repair, of course...Yeah, that's the ticket...). $1 per guess. Those who are bored senseless and desperate for something to live for may send your dollars and guesses to the address on my member page.

Nearest guess without going over the number wins. Winner and actuations will be announced on July 4...I'll even spring for some celebratory fireworks in the winner's hometown that night to make the whole thing 'festive'.

Camera was bought in Sept. 2004, heavily used (couldn't tell you how many events), but it's safe to say over 60. I will answer only yes/no questions (as best I can) for those who would like more info.

Obviously, I need more sleeeeeeep...And, y'know, a life. ;-)
