Al Bello's recent cockfighting gallery

| ->> Al Bello's recent post is the craziest thing I have ever seen! I knew it existed but the photos really put into perspective. It just amazes me that people watch this for sport and bet on the animals I'm sure. The photos are great. Al if you had inside info about this place, or just happen to stumble upon it, props to you, excellent job. Now I know why it is illegal here in the states, it is brutal. |

->> I wondered how, as Al put it, Cockfighting is the National Sport of Puerto Rico, when Puerto Rico isn't a nation.
Amazing photos. |

->> Al has some great images.
Unbelievable it is a national sport. What a sick and disturbing sport, but great images. |

->> Today's Wall Street Journal has a front-page story about ulitmate fighting. It's a big hit in Las Vegas, and has negatively impacted the popularity of boxing.
But yes, Al Bello's photos are really nice. |

->> These are wonderful but disturbing photos. The (2nd?) shot of one bird being bitten by another is equally sickening. Like Steven, I can't believe this is a national sport! Great photos though Al.

->> Just to get the record straight, Cockfighting is NOT our NATIONAL sport, it's Politics. This kind of events are held a lot on the central part of the island, and Yes there are a lot of people here that are always trying to have this kind of events Illegal. I just wanted to set the record straight, but thanks Al for taking your off time to bring out this kind of injustice and brutality thats been going on for decades here in Puerto Rico. Seeing the images made me feel sick to my stomach, and I hope some day it will be illegal.

->> It goes on here in Oregon as well. It's all underground. I would love to shoot it here, but it's never going to happen. It takes place in barns on private property. It would look much different than the slick casino atmosphere that Al experienced.
It's legal to raise gamecocks, but not legal to let them fight. Still, one can see little gamecock A-frame pens all over the rural areas of Oregon. |

->> Just wondering...
Do those of you who find Al's images and cock fighting "brutal" and "disturbing" also view boxing and ultimate fighting as brutal and disturbing?
I have never been a fan of boxing (to me its just boring), but I find people beating on each other, causing cuts and bleeding, and knocking out another human being much more brutal and disturbing than these cock fighting images. I find cock (& dog) fighting disturbing, but boxing is much more disturbing to me as I value a human's life/well-being much more than a bird's.
I'd like to hear other's thoughts...
Thanks for sharing the images Al. |

| ->> The biggest difference, obviously, is that humans have a choice whether to fight or not, these animals are forced, and bred for this purpose and death is ALWAYS the result. That is an abomination. |

->> Mr. Trimble,
I see your point but the idea that millions of people watch and derive pleasure/enjoyment from seeing seeing two people beat on each other seems to me to be more of an abomination.
(That should have been "others'" in my first post...I know someone caught that mistake.) |

->> I don't wish to take anything away from Bello's fine and difficult work or distract the conversation, but:
is cock fighting really any worse than the factory farming that feeds most of us? are the guys pitting the hapless birds against each other any more guilty of an immoral act than my otherwise guileless trip to {insert fast food reference here}?
don't get me wrong: i don't condone cockfighting any more than i would bullfighting or dog fighting. but i do happen to think there are more subtle and pervasive acts we each engage in that are at least as negative and harmful.

It is part of the United States of America.
That's nation enough.
Frankly I don't approve of the "sport", but Al did a fine job of photographing it. |
