2006 Churchill Downs Workshop
Skip Dickstein, Photographer
Stillwater | NY | USA | Posted: 4:46 PM on 03.02.06
->> Stop procrastinating about the 2006 Churchill Downs Workshop, get on the website at www.chdphoto.com and apply. It is tuition free as a result of wonderful sponsors like NIKON and Brooks Institute and others. Open to juniors and seniors in college. Just pay your own travel, and cheap lodging and a little food expense and we will do the teaching. Where else can you get up with the sun and hit the room at night knowing that you just had the experience of your life. All your questions about the program can be answered by getting on the site.

->> I went to this workshop a few years ago when I was a senior. There are so many subjects that attendees can pursue between the backside of the track, the track, and the front side. A student can shoot a story just on sports and competition or they can do a portrait series on those who make the races possible. From sports action to social issues there is something for every one to photograph at the Churchill Downs Sports Photojournalism Workshop. Aside from it being a wonderful experience there is not a day that goes by where I dont use something I learned at the workshop while working.

->> I know you've read all the posts before about how great the thing is, so just apply already. This isn't a workshop where they take 500 kids and all your money. It's small, you work one on one with phenominal mentors and like Brendan said, you will use the stuff you learn everyday in your profession.

Ladies, this is a great experience for you too so get your stuff together and send it in! E-mail me if you have any questions or need advice on editing.

->> I am hoping to apply for the Workshop, however, there may be some question as to my class standing. I should be a junior, but some of my credits have not been transferred to my new school location. In any case, if I don't get to apply this year, I will definitely do it next year. It's a sad situation considering that I am 33 years old and trying to be a junior.

If you dont mind getting up super early to shoot some fantastic light (barring no rain) then this will rock you in a big bad way.

Things not to miss-
-The look on everyones faces in the hotel lobby, the "Holy shit, i usually go to bed around this time"
-Biscuits n' Gravy andthe grits from Trackside
-Balancing your eyes between watching for pictures and watching out for horseshit
-Being able to carry around a 600mm for a a morning
-Kickin back in the hotel hottub with the champagne of beers
-washing all the dirt out of your clothes
-sleep deprivated insanity
-the spires of Churchill Downs
-Dave Black's inpersonation of a classic photographer

You'll have fun.....trust me.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most influential moments of your photography career and you HAVE TO APPLY or you’ll be missing out.

Please, don’t delay.

I'm already packed for Kentucky, it will be a good experience before Guatemala.
