->> Just wanted to see what the shooting situation was like at Amon Carter Stadium (TCU) for the Ft. Worth Bowl.
If anyone can give me any idea of the
exposure situation (for night game)
work room situation
high speed access
phone line access
and any other note worthy info I would be grateful. |

->> Chris-
The exposure at Amon Carter is pretty uneven. It's around 1/640 @ 2.8 @ ISO1600 in the center of the field and tapers off almost a full stop towards the end zones. The east side of the field (normally the visitor's sidelines) is a little bit better simply because the lights are significantly lower than on the other side. The work room is the press box at Amon Carter so you work alongside the writers. It's a little bit tight but it's not too bad. There is high speed wireless access and phone access. The wireless is encryped and requires a password so you'll probably want to set that up as soon as you get there. You also might find these links of interest http://www.tcu.edu/maps/docs/tcumap_print_athletic_bw.pdf and http://www.tcu.edu/maps. If you need more info just let me know and enjoy Fort Worth.

->> End zones have light falloff especially in North end zone. It has bben very cold last two Ft Worth Bowls so be prepared. Also media been in tent for pre-game meal. This is due to confined pressbox. Otherwise Andrew did an excellent job on data. I will see you ther.
If I get opportunity I'll send example of lighting but right now in middle of law school finals, no time. I should not be here but 15 hrs today of studying is killing me. |

->> Chris,
Andrew gave you some good info and is a pretty good guy, if you get a chance to meet him as I have. Here's some more scoop for you.
I shoot the Canon 20D with 2.8 glass and have been able to shoot with a Canon 550EX at 1/320 to 1/400th at f2.8 to f4 at 800 ISO with my flash on High Speed Sync (and a stroboframe). Some samples of the last night game I shot at TCU are on my member page (when they got awarded the MWC trophy). As Andrew said, the visitor side is best lighting-wise and also because there are fewer people on the sidelines over there. The media lines around the field are kinda screwy as they taper right into the wall near each endzone, which means that you can't next to goal-line without being inside the lines and getting asked to move. They are usually pretty strict at Amon Carter about being inside the lines, which is good. Everybody has to comply.
Plenty of room at the endzone areas. The Lettermen's Lounge is where the pre-game meal will be served (until the end of the first quarter) and I'm not sure who's catering it, but Rosa's mexican food catered the TCU games and I always looked forward to beef fajitas, rice and beans before the games.
Parking: I don't know where the media lot will be, if there is one. But, get there early and you will find lots of very close parking. I park right off Stadium Drive and West Berry in, I think, Lot 8. Five minute walk to the press-box side of the stadium, which is on TCU's campus.
While you're here, if you like Mexican food, try Uncle Julio's on Camp Bowie (probably 10 minutes from TCU). For really good BBQ, Cousin's BBQ on Bryant Irvin (right off I-20, in SW Fort, probably 15 minutes from TCU) is a local favorite.
If you need any specific directions or other ideas, let me know where you're staying and I'll hook you up.
Did you see this site: http://www.fwbowl.com ? They have some other info about photographers that you should know. |
