Have you ever been hit?
Mike Dunphy, Photographer

->> Just wondering if any of you have taken one for the team? I'm not talking cameras/lenses etc. I'm talking about getting hit by an out of control strong safety, (save the smart ass answer Mr. Blacker. It didn't hurt a bit), puck to the head, basketball star to the groin. You get the picture...or not ;-)

->> I've been hit by all manner of vicycles and skateboards, some close calls in football.

Two memorable ones include the time I was shooting a rider for an ad and he bailed on a jump. I got a shot of that, then saw the bike full frame (I was shooting with a fisheye). I ducked just in time and didn't get hit, bur my camera sure did. Ripped the prism off my F4 and smashed it and the flash mounted on it. You can see a video clip of that at
http://www.tdfilms.com/ouch.mov .

Was shooting a BMX race with longer glass. I was close on one pro rider over a jump, didn't see two others clash and get squirrely. I looked up and one of them was coming straight at me. He's a pro, I should have stood there and let him straighten up and go around. Instead, I decided to play the 50/50 game and move out of his way. I was wrong in my choice, that's the way he went. I was sent flying about 15 feet, landed on my butt. I was unhurt.

This is the kind of stuff that makes NPS think that my middle name is "impact damage".

->> Let's see:

A few overthrown baseballs. Had a catcher pin me to the wall as he made a play on a pop foul (the photo box was just a painted line on the field).

In basketball a few players landing on top of me, a few glancing blows, a few wild basketballs and then the time a player used my ankle as leverage to jump over me. This does not count the time that I was photographing the Texas state basketball tournament and someone intentionally and repeatedly kicked me in the ribs-- thankfully playfully. I turned and it was Gov. Bush laughing at me.

For football a few close calls and a couple weeks ago during pregame warm-ups I took a punt in the chest (no clue it was coming), thankfully no cameras around me neck, only off the shoulders.

But none of that compares to the carnage of a full-on media scrum during scandal time in DC. Elbows, lenses, monopods, all sorts of things bang into your ribs and head. And nothing beats the time during the Monica-gate era when walking backwards down the street to photograph someone coming out of the courthouse that I flipped backwards over a bench. It was definitely a 15-yard personal foul call for a chop block but the ref never threw the flag!

Thankfully no motorized vehicles have clipped me, at least not when photographing.

I can say I spent one cold snowy November evening getting nailed by snowballs from the student section at a University of Colorado football game. Walked away from that game with a nice welt on the side of my head from a iceball that caught me blindsided.

->> 2 years ago - A Bradley Brave landed square in my lap coming from the weak side during a basketball game. I saw him coming, but the venue allows fans to stand right behind the photo area. Nothing I could do but save the equipment and try and catch him.

This year - twice sitting in the same chair getting my equipment ready and taking pre-match shots. First time I looked up just in time to take a smoker from slam practice square in my forehead. It was a rocket that made my teeth rattle. Took me about 30 minutes to really be able to function again. 2nd time my 300 2.8 took a glancing blow to the shroud. It didn't leave a mark or any damage, but I don't sit in that chair anymore.

Football - I generally stay on my feet on one knee to facilite getting out of the way. Don't get behind me :)

More recently, while shooting a hockey game, a stray puck hit me in the chin. The first thing I did was check to see how many teeth were missing. Zero was the answer to that. Last year I got hit in the ribs by a puck, that cracked the sixth rib on the left side. (There is a story that goes a long with that but I won't get into right now.) And I have been hit across the forearm by hockey sticks on numerous occasions. The hazards of shooting hockey from between the players benches.

I was waiting to vomit up blood or have a heart attack (something I heard could happen if you are ever hit point-blank in the heart with a precise amount of force). Nothing happpened - it really wasn't that bad. Now, if it hit me in the head that would have been a different story...

Aside from that I've had an over thrown pass land at my feet and some guy from the Jets slide between my legs. I've had two incomplete passes from UMass football hit me (there is a reason they never won that season).

I think the worst was a player from Fordam's woman's basketball come off a shot and kick my camera into my face. My head hit the floor so hard I was seeing stars. The worst part was the player then stood over me swearing at me for being on the line (where I sat for nearly every home basketball game at UMass, because I shot for the University). Her coach reprimanded her and the ref tossed her from the game for unsportsman like conduct.

I seem to have the worst luck when shooting a new sport--first hockey game I got hit by a player falling over the boards in the penalty box, my first NCAA football game I got creamed by the practice kicking net with two players on top of it, and took a field hockey ball to the groin my first time out shooting that. As for me, I've had a hs football player coming towards me at full speed get tackled and whipped into me, to knock me down. No serious damage, but it hurt for a while.

I thought I would be missed and was attempting to run away in the process of the player being tackled onto my left leg. Now see, my leg suffered zero injury. I had my kneepads on, so maybe something that would have been painful was saved by those, but since they weren't going at a fast pace, I stuck my hand out to try and push them away. Bad move. My hand hit a helmet at the base of my thumb (where you can feel the bone) and I've had a bruise ever since. Still hurts too.

I had my eye on the guy running the ball and never saw the guy chasing after him. I looked through my take later to find one of those "last things you see before you die" pictures where the player's elbow was visible. Very ominous. Anyway, he knocked me back about 6 feet and I fell so as to minimize damage to my camera and maximize damage to my body. The camera was fine since I cradled it like my only child, but I tore a rotator cuff. It was the first game the paper let me shoot by myself, so as soon as I realized I was on my back, I gave the thumbs up to the crowd, got helped up, and refused assistance from the medics. I shuffled around the rest of the game certain that I was bleeding internally. I had the coolest bruises for about 2 weeks.

I was able to finish shooting the tournament but the following day found my leg swollen and with a bruise the size of some small countries. It took just over 6 weeks to regain normal coloration and limp-free use of my right leg. Ten months later and I still feel an annoying ache in that spot once every couple weeks or so.

That same lacrosse tourney is just only a couple months away... No injury can keep me from shooting it (lacrosse is a blast, by the way - try it sometime and you'll see why). This year - shinguards! Definitely shinguards!!

I've always felt that there is a fine line between caution and that greedy feeling you get when a play is coming right at you and the 8fps music is playing. I shoot with both eyes open and usually feel pretty safe. However, being cognitive of where the play is occuring doesn't always save you. A friend of mine was telling me a story about his getting steamrollered. It was on a punt and he was locked in on the punt returner when a member of the kicking team, having acquired a full head of steam, was blocked precisely into my friend, after having also acquired some manner of altitude. The end result was the player seemingly falling from the sky upon the hapless unsuspecting photog who, right up until impact, was gleefully firing away at what was sure to be a great return.

At a junior rodeo while shooting junior girl barrel racing, I was behind the timer and off to the side in a wide arena shooting the second barrel when I decided to chimp the shot I just took. Well, the girl broke the timer and the horse made a big sweeping turn to the right and of course I was still chimping... All I saw was a breast collar and the front of the horse just before I tucked and took the hit in my right shoulder. This of course sent me flying about 10 feet landing on my back. I sat up and brushed of the dirt, I was not hurt, the camera never touched the ground and I never missed a rider.

Moral: NEVER chimp your photos inside a rodeo arena while the animals are still there!

Worse hit I ever took though was during batting practice for a 11-12 year old travel baseball team. One of the players "little" 7 year old sister wanted a chance at bat. I decided, this would be a great shot from head on. Not like she is going to hit it too hard. Helmet over her eyes because it was too big, I crouch off to the right of the coach tossing the balls in and pop....line drive rocketing right at my lens. Do I hit the deck? Noooo...I stand up...only to fall right back down into the fetal position rolling around. It took me six weeks to stop sounding like Mickey Mouse.

Having it all caught by a fellow SS'er and posted in the fun pix- priceless.

Happened during my first season of covering Florida football.

Enjoy, and laugh.

->> A few weeks ago in Hawaii, I was hit by a media motorcycle cutting a corner inexplicably close while I was shooting cyclists kneeling on the inside of a turn. The Harley's big fat foot peg caught me in the ribs, knocked me on my back, and left me winded for what seemed like an eternity.

I managed to save both bodies and the 4, but the road rash on my leg is still getting infected today, almost a month later.

->> By a bicyclist during a triathlon. I was kneeling on the edge of the road as he was approaching and looking down at his right foot which would not click into the pedal. I'm thinking 'he does not know I'm here & he's going to hit me' and got ready to bail to the shoulder. At the last moment it appeared that he would miss so I stayed put. BAM! His handlebar hit my right elbow and I wound up on my butt.

He stopped for a second, more concerned with his pedal than the collision, and continued his race. I had a goose egg for a couple of days.

->> Took a shot at the NORBA Downhill Championships here a few years back, focusing on Missy Grove and didn't pay attention to the rider ahead of her who didn't handle the steep downhill section with corner as well as others did. I thought I was safe outside the boundary tape. Nothing like the sudden impact with someone doing 30mph to make you aware of everything around you after that. Thought I was safe outside the boundary tape.

->> I worked on a NHRA Pro Stock a few years ago as a crewmember. The crewchief on the car went down track to wait for our car to do its burnout towards him and be backed up by radio commands from the waiting crewchief. Unknown to everyone the battery pack for his radio fell off and landed on the track. The driver proceeded to do his burnout running over the battery and shooting it out the back of the car from tires that probably were spinning over a hundred miles per hour. The battery hit me dead square in the shin, dead smack on the bone. I had no idea what happened till a crew member of Warren Johnsons Pro Stock held up a battery and asked if it was mine and said "I bet that hurt". Took my leg out from under me and hurt like hell. I couldnt walk and that leg, I thought for sure I broke it. I worked the rest of the weekend but limped badly. The impact had bruised the bone. I had a lump where it hit me for over a year.
