->> Most likely something to do with your lens mount. Error 01 is most commonly associated with that. I'm guessing you either have the 70-200 2.8 IS, or the 100-400IS, or the 28-135 IS. I'am I right?

->> I used to get the 01 Error quite a bit on my original 70-200 f/2.8 IS that I got back in 2002, but only when I shot vertical. Never hada problem with the recent version.

I was also getting the error recently with my 400 f/2.8 + 1.4x Turned out the screws on the 1.4x were loose. Tighted them up and no more errors.

First time I got the error, I had to look it up in the manual :)

->> When you send the lens in for repair make sure to ask for them to check the IS system. I have had these errors before and it has turned out the IS system needed to be replaced.

->> OT I'm sorry, but didn't think this was worth posting another thread...anyone know what the # symbol means in the top lcd screen on a Mark II? I brought it to canon to get a new shutter (after a whopping 17,000 pics) and it came back with the # symbol on it. Not causing any problems so far, just curious if anyone knows what it means?

->> Chris,

Says in the manual that the # refers to a personal function. Do you have one of these set?

->> Kurtis, yep your right, it only happens when my 100-400 is on. I think it could help to take it in and get it checked out. Does that seem like the right thing to do?

->> Alison, yes, I would suggest you have the lens looked at, specifically the IS as already suggested. I had all sorts of weird things happen with my 70-200 IS to the point where the IS became totally unreliable after a couple years. Had to have the IS module replaced, which was quite costly. Now it works perfectly. Unfortunately I didn't take the early symptoms seriously until well after the lens was out of warranty.

->> Alison,
yep, sent it into Canon. The problem is with the lens mount or the IS motor. Just so everyone knows the lens I listed above are notorious for this problem. Probably around $300 for repair, Just FYI. Does it happen mostly when your shooting vertical? If it does its the IS motor. Good luck.

->> like others have mentioned, it could likely be the IS motor. this was the case w/my 1D MK2 + 70-200 IS. sent both into CPS and they ended up replacing the IS motor (for free even -- on a ~3 year old lens). haven't had the errors come back since then.

->> Norm,

Why did they decide not to charge you for the IS motor replacement?

->> Yep, it happened to me in Phillip Island just a couple of weeks ago when I was there for MotoGP.

My 70-200 decided to go Error 01, so for each shot I took in the winners circle it was "turn off, drop out battery, shoot" I'd be lucky if I got 3 shots off in a single instance...Still I got what I wanted.

Upon my return, contacted (my hero) Chris at Canon in Irvine, was told to ship it in...Sent it in Fedex OVN, had it back within 8 days, same issue as Norm, IS motor went south.

Same as Norm, 3 year old 70-200ISf2.8, no charge for the work and they even shipped it back 2day express at their expense.

Huge THANK YOU to Canon in Irvine. Yet again they have saved the day for me and went that extra mile in service.

Andrew... =)
