->> A CALL TO ALL SUMMER INTERNS!
As I am packing up to leave this week for good ole Montana, I remembered a post last year on this same topic so I decided to bring it back this year to see what all the students are doing this summer and where they will be. Please do tell. DON’T FORGET the who, what, where, when, and if you want…the why.
I will be in Bozeman Montana. interning for the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. (Thanks to Sean Sperry and SSA) I heard it’s very nice out there.
If anyone’s dropping by Bozeman or Montana shoot me an email and we can hang out. |

Nice setup, 2-3 days a week in the archive (scanning, retouching, researching) and the rest of the time working on my own stories in the city, under the guidance of the editors and art directors at the agency.
I'll be living in Brooklyn with another photog friend of mine from Seattle, who also is doing the internship with Black Star. If anyone's in the city, I'd love to meet up! |

->> No internship this summer, but I've been working for an estate of a photographer. I'm archiving photos from the late 40s through 2000. The type of work is something I call "artistic journalism". Its not really the type of stuff you'd see on a postcard, but its very timeless with universal appeal. Lots of street scenes from Paris around 1950, Mexico and Africa in the 60s, and some abstract macro work from the 80s and 90s. The photographer turns out to be a former teacher of Peter Read Miller. It's loads of fun, though I don't shoot at all, and I am learning a lot about photo restoration. Hopefully we're going to put up a site or two to sell the prints and then I'll get all sorts of experience with that.
Good luck to the rest of you.

Over the course of these days, I have received a speeding ticket and a parking ticket- what luck ;-) My second assignment was a collision with three fatalities. . .very sad. . .and people say there is no news in North Dakota. I have found quite the contrary. I'm loving the staff, community and even all mosquitos.
Hope everyone else is enjoying the summer. |

Thankfully, this summer affords me a break from school for a while, because full-time school and full-time work equals losing hair and sleep! Good luck to all, and if anyone's in Hawaii, please let me know...Hey Dusty, I heard you're comin' here in a couple of months! |

->> Started an internship at the Gillette News-Record in Wyoming on May 2nd. Or as the talented Mr. Witte calls it, "Why-On-Earth-Oming." I never realized how difficult it would be to find an internship when one is NOT a student, but all I needed was one offer. The one offer asked me to come early making this a four month stint in the Powder River Basin. It's the closest major city to Devils Tower. There is no spot news BUT we rarely shoot handshakes, podium, ribbon-cuttings or check-passings. The newsroom is great and I am treated like a regular staffer. Very thankful for the regular work and opportunity to grow. Now what to do when this is done?
I'm posting weekly, please take a look-see.
Dustin, I have people in Billings, will be up that way sometime soon. |

| ->> I'm in sixth or seventh week at the (Mattoon) Journal Gazette in Mattoon, Ill. It's going okay except for making me work the night desk where I don't take any photos and I have to design the obits page. The designing part isn't all that bad though...it's pretty basic stuff. Didn't know anything about design before hand. I just want something more interesting to happen around here besides the regular stuff though. Fair, festivals, and kids playing in the local pool is about all we've got around here. Quick question though...why the hell are there so many photogs from Muncie, IN. I noticed like 4 of you are from there just from this list. |
