->> I cannot find a new/used Nikon 80-200 2.8 ANYWHERE! Mine broke and there none available at the usual suspects (B&H, KEH, etc.) Out of stock...
Did Nikon discontinue this lens? What's going on here?
If anyone knows, let me know where to get one.
Thanks.

->> Which 80-200 2.8?
They still make the 80-200D series... if you're looking for the AFS, it was discontinued when they introduced the 70-200 VR.
I should be getting a VR myself next week, in which case I'll be selling my old Push-Pull AF-D version... |

->> Kat,
If you are looking for a 80-200 Af-S, you are going to have to go used. I bought one recently that is in transit, out of the classified ads recently. If you buy new, like said above, their is the 70-200 VR, or you can still find the 80-200 AF-D, but they are often back-ordered. Good luck!

->> Also, depending on what's wrong with yours, you might be able to get it repaired for less than the cost of a working used one.
Tempe Camera Repair, here in Tempe Arizona, is an authorized Nikon lens repair shop, as is CRIS located in Chandler. I've used them both and think they're good. |

->> Speaking of Repairs, the folks at Professional Photographic Repair right here in San Diego do a pretty good job.
They usually can give you an estimate right there on the spot before you turn it over to them.
They're right off of Convoy in Kearney Mesa... I'm sure they're in the phone book, but if you need help finding 'em, send me an e-mail. |

->> My 80-200f2.8 AF-S is mounted to my wall, attached to a dead F-100 (the 80-200f2.8 blew the AF-S motor somehow). This lens has a lovely sticker on it which reads "This Is Why I Shoot Canon"
Oh wait, not what you were asking, I think I have an older 80-200f2.8 AF-D in my bag I might want to sell if I can find it. If you have the choice I think the two best are the orignal 80-200f2.8 AF-D (push pull) and the 80-200f2.8 AF-S.
I didn't like the non-push-pull 80-200f2.8 AF-D at all. It handles awkwardly. |

| ->> To spare SS'ers a new unexciting thread I thought I would revive an old one. I need an Nikon 80-200 2.8 and I see Nikon still makes the older "D" lens as well as the 70-200 2.8 VR lens. I have one qustion, is the focusing speed on these two lenses comparable? |

| ->> The 70-200 has the AF-S auto focus system, it simply blows away the regular system, it is not even close. |

| ->> I have to second Eric, the 70-200 (regardless of VR) has the AF-S and it's ultra fast, whereas the 80-200"D" is simply slow, at best. |

->> Exactly how is Frischling's post "off topic" or "inappropriate?" I'd just like to know.
But I agree with him that the "push-pull" version is awkward. Glass was OK, but I didn't like either the manual focus or the AF, and it weight a ton. I got rid of mine, and haven't had an 80-200 since.
I really wish they would make much smaller, lighter 80-200 AF-S f4 for carrying on your shoulder on a second body. Those 2.8s weight a ton when you have to carry them for four hours. A 180/f2.8 AF-S would be great, too. |

->> There have been a number of Nikkor 80200f2.8 AF-S lenses on E-Bay in the past weeks. They didn't seem to be going for all that much. The AF-S is a great lens, it is quick and responsive and quite robust.
....and I am sure my post from 9 months ago was totally inappropriate and way off topic.
......and Wally my Nikkor 180f2.8 Ai-S is still in my bag with my set of FA bodies. I won't sell it, even though I shoot Canon as well. This is one of the best lenses Nikon made (I think). |
