->> New iPod Photos came out today, but the interesting thing is the is iPod Camera Connector. It will probably be just as slow as that Belkin thing, but does anyone have any more info on it?

| ->> To me it is unclear if it will be a media reader like the Belkin or a direct USB 2 or Firewire connector. If it is a USB 2 or Firewire connector it could be a lot more useful than the terrible slow and battery hungry Belkin. |

| ->> The speed will be the make or break of this for use by Photographers. While in the field type storage of images form cameras for Photographers isn't the way Apple built this, In the new products announced today they have removed most all of the items except the USB2 Cable of what was once included. The cable to view photos on a TV is now an option for instance and no longer in the box, same with the dock, firewire cable and case and all told about 130.00 of worth of items I've read. They did lower the price by 150.00 as well. |

| ->> Damn , it's USB. Who the hell uses USB 2.0, the world should revolve around the wonder of FireWire |

| ->> You can buy an optional FW cord to attach the iPods to a Mac but it just doesn't come with it anymore. The photo reader on the other hand is USB. Not sure how many cameras it will support out of the gate. Still somewhat of a gimmick. Downloading from the camera chews through camera batteries fast and is why most people who are serious about photography hardly ever downlaod from the camera. |

->> Some people also feel that USB card readers can be used but I've not really heard anything official from Apple.
The only official Apple word was a new Adapter to load pictures from your camera to the iPhoto iPod. Seems that the recent update may also allow non iPhoto Ipods to pull in Photo's as a new menu item has showed up on third Generation iPods that says import photos after last weeks iPod update. I only have a first generation iPod and since it doesn't have the Apple dock connector all this is foreign to me. ;) |

->> Would someone try plugging their firwire camera into their ipod with the included cable and tell us all waht happens? The downloading software is built into the ipod so I'm curious what would happen. It would be fantastic if you could run the ipod tethered. This could be the answer for the riduclously large files coming out 1 DS Mk II's and D2X's

->> Jeez. The thing only works with an iPod Photo... I don't need to SEE the images, I just want to STORE the images on my (paid for) 15Gb iPod.
Apple half-asses it again. |

->> Jim,
I don't think this is an issue with Apple, but with the camera makers.
The only way around having the camera not write only to the disk is to have a proprietary program running to tell the computer to take the images from the camera, such as Nikon Capture.
The iPod photo connector probably doesn't work tethered to point-and-shoots either. It works like when you plug your PS into a computer and iPhoto or another program launches that simply uses the camera as an expensive card reader. And adds wear and tear on the camera as well which is why it's always recommended you take the card from your 1D or D2 and put it in a reader.
I'm sure Canon and Nikon did not want to share the software drivers for their pro-level cameras with Apple for them to download directly from the cameras. Why give away something you can can charge an extra $100 to people already paying you $4,000 for a camera? |

| ->> I've heard about the Jobo before and have been looking for it ever since. Does anyone have any experience with one of these? Not to put down the IPod Photo but I've heard the Jobo is the professional's version of the somewhat gimicky IPod. Can anyone give us some real world experience with one? Thanks!!!! |

| ->> It would appear it takes over 45 minutes to download a 1GB card! |

->> The 45 minute download for a one gig card is a bad thing. The iPod battery (and camera battery) will likely die before the download is complete. And since the card has to be in the camera to be downloaded, you can not use the camera while you are downloading.
I keep hoping Apple of Belkin will figure out a way to make these things work in speedy way. I have an old Minds at Work 30 gig Digital Wallet and I wouldn't leave home without it. It takes 12 - 15 minutes to download a one gig card and it has FireWire connector to hook up to my Macs. The only problem, aside from the fact that the company is no longer with us and repairs are a problem, is that battery life is not that great. I can download 2 - 3 cards off one battery charge. So now I carry three spare batteries for it with me.
