What is the IFPO about?

->> Another photographer told me to join this organization, as it would give me a press pass for events. I was wondering what people thought of the IFPO - International Freelance Photographers Orgaization. I don't believe I will join, but I was curious to learn more what others think.
Thanks
Adrian

->> Adrian,

This has been covered before but obviously worth visiting again as a fresh reminder to folks that don't know to avoid this 'organization'.

Simply, it's a scam. A company that has put together these packages that say you'll get a 'press pass' when you pay them for membership. Nothing more than a piece of paper laminated that says 'PRESS' on it.
In reality, it doesn't count for anything. They'll even charge you for them to write a letter to the appropriate people stating that you're on assignment for their magazine(a cheesy publication containing photos that members have taken). This isn't legit in any way and they prey on those that don't know better.(yes, I was one many many years ago)

If you want to shell out the dough, they even have a baseball hat that says PRESS in bold white letters too.
Sure beats the fedora with a press card in the brim. How 50's!
It's good to hear you're not joining. The $25.00 you spent on SS.com was a waaaay smarter investment!

John

I figured this was a scam - I just wanted to validate it as I was told I had to join.
Cheers
Adrian
