White Balance inconsistent on 20d when bursting

->> I was shooting a high school hockey game last night and much to my surprise and joy, the lighting was awesome! No strobes! I was able to get Iso 400 f2.8 1/320. I set my white balance white my gray card and used the 20d’s 5 frames per second a few times, shooting 2-4 images per burst. When I got home and reviewed the images that were shot by just holding the shutter down, the white balance was not consistent at all from shot to shot. The first one would be balanced, however, the second or third had a bad color caste to them. Anyone have any ideas? (I don’t know what type of lights are in the Conway Arena in Nashua, NH, if that matters)

->> I bet they are mercury vapor lights...I was shooting in court and had the same issue with my Mark II's. It has happened in older high school gyms as well. I'm sure I'm coming off as an idiot...because I can't remember the right terminology...but basically I think the lights sort of pulsate...hence different color temp. Can someone clarify what I'm trying to say? Anyway...it's not the camera...cheers...Dan.

->> Roger,

What you are seeing is the pulsing or flickering of the light source. Arena lights are not really "continuous" in nature like an incandescent or tungsten bulb would be. They actually arc at a certain rate that is invible to the eye, but easily picked up in a photograph at 1/320 second. You just caught some of the lamps at various stages of the flicker.

An answer I posted to a 10d shooter with similar results.
