An apology
Jan Langsner, Photographer
Lloyd | AB | Canada | Posted: 10:57 PM on 03.17.03
->> I know this is not the proper place to say this but I must speak my mind.

I for one, and I’m sure most Canadians would like to apologize to our American friends for the comments and position of our prime minister and his cabinet.

In case you don't know today he said

"If military action proceeds without a new resolution of the Security Council, Canada will not participate."

I am totally embarrassed and appalled at this statement. For the record I am stating that I personally am behind the USA 100%. I have never been embarrassed to be a Canadian before, but right now I am!

I'm pretty sure I am correct in stating that the Canadian Government does not represent the opinion of the majority of this countries citizens.

I sure hope Canada never needs the support of the USA on any military issues, because I wouldn’t blame your government if they decided it wasn't in their best interest to help.

Once again, sorry for the position of our government.

Jan

The next time you feel the need to apologize on behalf of all Canadians, keep it to yourself.

That's real nice huh? And this is from someone who is not even an SS member.

Besides I never once said I am apologizing on behalf of "all" Canadians. What I said was, "I for one, and I’m sure most Canadians would like to apologize". And I still feel that way.

Many years ago I lived in a dorm with members of the Iranian Navy while their countrymen held our embassy staff hostage. From that experience, I learned that there are usually vast differences between government actions and the people that live in their own country.

There is no need to apologize to us. Diversity of opinion is what makes the world go 'round. Anyway, send us some good beer and we'll forgive you!

Now, if you were a Dixie Chick, I would be a little harsher....

By the way I got another email from the guy that thinks I'm a dipsh*t. Seems as though he rightfully took exception to the fact that I posted his response to me on this board, when he can't respond back. Well Andrew all it takes is 25.00 USD and you can respond.

One point that he did bring up is that he feels I meant that anyone that disagrees with me is an embarrassment to this country. That's not what I meant. Everybody is entitled to his or her opinion just the way I stated mine. I meant that the leader of our government should be ashamed of himself for ditching our friends to the south when they need help. And I am not just talking about the current situation. I'm also referring to the fact the he did not show his face in the USA for 6 weeks after 9-11. It's a 2 maybe 3 hour flight from Ottawa to Washington. The British PM made the trip the following day to lend his support.

Like Rishard said, you don't have to make an apology to Americans... You can have your opinion and others also have different thoughs about the war... You already have yours... Your government has its own opinion... I'm sure the Canadian gov. works for you guys... Not to hurt Canadians... Anyway, good to know you don't hate Americans there...

The Prime Minister is just being a Politician.

I have seen two ships leave the harbour here for the Persian Gulf. Though we may not be participating in the ground conflict, we will have a presence in the Gulf.

Do you remember when the Minister of Defence said we had no ground troops in Afganistan and that same day there was a AP photo on the cover of the Globe and Mail showing some of the first captured Taliban being off loaded from a Chopper by the Canadian forces that had captured them?

->> The prime ministers position is "If military action proceeds without a new resolution of the Security Council, Canada will not participate". Canada was with the USA in 1990 in Kuwait, last year when the coalition ousted the Taliban in Afganistan, was with the US in Korea, Somolia, Bosnia etc. All approved by the UN/SC. Canada may be on the sidelines for this war BUT it will play a major role in supporting efforts to rebuild post-war Irag. Getting Irag back on its feet will be a major task, and Canada has proven very adept at helping countries hit by strife, war and disasters. We have the 18th Air Defence Reg. here in my home town and I know they want to go, however, at this time Canada won't be there to win the war but we will want be there to keep and rebuild peace.

->> David,

Technically I believe there have only been three military actions approved by the UNSC in its history. I heard a historian from the UN on NPR (National Public Radio) recently addressing this issue. He said the only actions approved by the SC have been Korea, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. The others were simply "peace keeping" missions were the use of force was not authorized. The NATO actions in Kosovo, of which Canada was a participant, were unauthorized by the SC.

As for reaction down here with regard to Canada this time around... there isn't any (at least that I've heard).

" It was announced today that Canada is now prepared to help the United
States in its war against terrorism. They have promised to commit 2 of their
largest battleships, 6,000 armed troops and 60 fighter jets.

However......after the exchange rate, that comes down to a canoe, 2 Mounties,
and a flying squirrel. "

In even the toughest of times we must find a bit of humor.

Tim and Brad, thank you for bringing up one of the few movies I have watched multiple times and still laugh at. I'll have to watch it again tonight.

Thomas, Thank you for your words of encouragement, although I had to look up the word troglodytes. Again this site being educational.

In addition to the great comments here I have also been getting a lot of emails. 38 emails of support and 2 that were less than flattering. To those 2 people and you know who you are, if you have different opinion than I do that's fine, but there is no reason to be rude and abusive about it. You both really showed what you are made of.

Richard, I’ll buy you the first round at the Luau.

As for the Canadian government, don't sweat it..it's just the politics of getting re-elected. And as for the French, just keep this in mind (and for those of you have an investigative reporter on staff, they will verify this:) any time you have a government, group or individual making a stance that makes little sense; rest assured it means that there's money involved.

In the case of our allies, the French, they sold Iraq some technology they shouldn't have sold them, and they haven't been paid for it. Enough said.
