->> It is very interesting to see the difference between the Editors choice and the Readers choice images.
Editors choose -- mayhem, disaster, misery, suffering, death, third world, hunger, Fire, murder etc. etc.
Readers choose -- beauty, animals, cute, serene, nature, happiness, landscape, sports, etc.etc.
I have wondered for a while now, are all the gory images what we want to see, need to see, or are we being force fed by a media that should maybe concentrate on showing more of the positive, happy and funny things happening all around us?
Are the pj s pushing those images? Do you really need to have an image of some guy being shot in the head to be recognized as a good pj?
And it’s not just on this site. I had just received NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism 2004. A very large part of it is death, misery and destruction.
These are just some things I have been wondering about. I am not a journalist, I do not write, just a photographer that sometimes has a hard time getting his captions right.
Hope you all have a successful 2005!

->> Juerg:
Photojournalism can do many things but I think its first priority should be to inform, illuminate and be a catalyst for positive change.
Too often, difficult images are edited from our newspapers and magazines as readers increasingly expect and demand visual diversions to the struggles of daily life in the world.
Entertaining imagery has its place, but the true power of the medium is in it's ability to command your attention, even if you'd prefer not to look.
If we could all face those squeamish issues with a hardened resolve to address them, the world would no doubt be a better place.
Unfortunately, it's far easier to pick up the remote and lose yourself in distraction.

->> Chris,
Although the year is not done yet I have put together my own images from the past year of sports here at Vanderbilt. I would like to see others from the site do the same thing, so we could see our own Year in Photos.
Cheers,

->> I was referring to the incidents that have yet happened. I saw some amazing photos from the attack in Iraq today that aren't on Year in Pictures.
I too am going through my photos for various contests, finding out what I am short in and trying to concentrate on that the last two weeks. |
