->> Thanks guys. Sorry, I had a hard time containing my excitement.
My family probably isn't going to be thrilled when I tell them I signed up last night on the volunteer list at work for Christmas Eve AND Christmas Day. :o|
Maybe I should sign the overtime list for next quarter while I'm at it. Or, maybe not.
All right Chris! It *is* going to be great, isn't it? Ok, all the other students chime in when you get your notices.

->> Excitement, energy, being inspired ... that's what we're looking for in the participants in Sports Shooter University (as we did with the Workshop & Luaus).
This is a new venture for me ... but something that I have thought long and hard about. While this is our first "hands-on" educational event, the faculty is not resting on the laurels of the successful Workshop & Luau.
We wish we could have everyone that has asked for a registration form be a part of this, but we want to make this workshop a smaller, more intimate setting for learning.
We hope that this event will provide an educational and eye-opening experience for the participants, one that will not only give them some tips and knowledge they didn't have before but also motivate them to aspire to become better story-tellers.
It will be great to have Dianna, Chris and the other 25 or so people to work with come this Feb. in Orange County.
More acceptance notices will be going out in the upcoming days.
Thanks for everyone that has emailed me about this wonderful new event, your comments about it (and the recent Luau) are useful and appereciated.
Mahalo ---- Have a great Turkey Day!

->> People must not be working in the kitchen preparing their Turkey Day spreads this Thanksgiving Day morning!
I have received several panicked emails already about Sports Shooter University after I made the above post a few minutes ago ...
NO, we have not filled all of the available slots as of yet. Dianna and Chris are just two of the first group of photographers we have accepted and confirmed into this event.
If you have an application form, you can still email them to me --- with the url to your ss.com Hidden Gallery application portfolio or via regular mail with a CD with your 20-image portfolio.
If you have not requested an application form, you can do so by emailing me. Details on the registration process, cost and other information are on the front page of ss.com.
We have not filled all of the available spots for SSU as of now! So please apply if you want to attend the NEXT coolest photography event going!
Happy Turkey Day!

->> Notifications will be sent out to those who have a place on the waiting list as well as those that we did not accept.
We have many portfolios and applications to look over, so please be patient.
There are a limited number of slots available in this first hands-on, shooting workshop from Sports Shooter, so we have to be a little deliberate and careful in the selection process.
I am still getting requests for applications and I encourage anyone who really wants to attend to get that and your portfolio together sooner rather than later. Once we fill all of the available slots in SSU, I will post a notice on ss.com and we will start a waiting list.
Thanks to everyone who has requested an application and to those that have taken the time to apply.
Mahalo!

I'm still waiting with my fingers crossed for my application to be processed, but for the fortunate ones who have made the list, kudos to all of you. I'm sure that you all will make 110% effort to use what the greats will teach in February. Congrats, Dianna, Chris, and Dan!!! |

(Specifically, the professionals with more than four years experience who would still like an excuse to get together with other great sports photographers in sunny Southern California once a year.) Anything in the works for us?

Note; please think about the photos you are showing the staff.
Some of you are getting NO's because of two or three photos that just should have'nt been in your portfolios.
I have seen some really nice work, thank you for time.
Joe, can we have the first one before we think annual.

->> Matt -
"Getting NO's because of two or three photos that just shouldn't have been in your portfolios?"
I can understand this as a criteria for a contest, but when someone is applying for an "educational" experience how do a couple of bad editing choices factor in?
Of course the judges can take who they want for whatever reason they want. I'm cool with that. I just feel like any applicant might feel like they are trying to get a bank loan, - those who don't need it can get it - and those who could benefit the most can't get a break.
No, I didn't apply and I'm just outside looking in. Curious what others think. I hope I can stir a discussion without disrespecting those running the show.
signed,
probably in big trouble.... |

| ->> I just wanted to second Brad's question, about anything for those of us with too much experience to apply. (according to the guidelines) It is possible to teach old dog's new tricks. I know that I am alway's learning somthing when I get together with other shooters, and I know I would benefit greatly from the Sport Shooter University Staff. Congratulations to all that applied and made the cut. I wish that I could apply, as it will be held practically in my backyard. |

->> I designed Sports Shooter University with students and entry-level professional photographers in mind.
However, if you're a "veteran" staff photographer who has not covered much sports in your career or need more experience in shooting sports to improve ... if you write a compelling reason for me to include you, you might just get in.
That is one of the reasons why I included an essay portion to the SSU application. An applicant's portfolio is not 100% of the equation ... their background, experience and the essay are all considered.
But as I said ... this is a workshop that is intended for students and beginning newspaper shooters, so keep that in mind as well.
I have sent out the second round of acceptance emails tonight ... and we still have several slots remaining. So if you haven't sent in your application if you already have one ... you still have time. And if you haven't requested an application, better do that soon!

Enterprise Rent-A-Car seems to have lower prices ranging from about $130 for economy to about $200 for a Sport Utility (They also allow people under 25 to rent their cars).
I'm definitely going to rent a car for the 5 days. Anybody need a ride?

I started looking for flights over the weekend. I have yet to book, as I am a commitment phobe. However I did find a flight that is nonstop both ways out of Chicago for $275.

->> I wish we could take everyone that applied ... but that was about 90 photographers and students.
Because of the nature of this particular workshop, I had to limit the number of participants to 25 ... we just can't take 100 photographers to a basketball or baseball game.
Please do not look upon not being accepted into this workshop as a "rejection" ... there were many, many, many great portfolios and essays that were submitted.
The process was difficult because we took into consideration a number of things, not just how good a portfolio an applicant had.
Personal and professional goals (and how they were explained) were also a very important ... that's why I included the essay section in the application process.
This is a very unique workshop ... we think it is the first held in cooperation with an NCAA Division I conference ... but it is not for everyone.
I have received numerous emails from people that were not accepted and most took a very positive spin on it ... "I hope to get better so next time my work will measure up and I will be a part of this cool event..." was one comment.
Mahalo!
